Hi you all,

I just joined the Mesa gang. After playing for more than 20 years, I just got my first Mesa.
I sold my Ampeg V4BH to get a Fathom from fellow tber 'jetofuj' on recommendation of Tom Bowlus.

After a first short twiddling session I am very pleased with this amp.
I am sure it will pass the band/live mix test.

It will drive 2-3 Aguilar GS112s.

Well, here its is:

I had Eminence DeltaLites 2512 Series II in two of the Aggies.
Now I am back to 2 original speakers and one Delta.
It just sounds better that way with the Fathom.
I was kind of surprised, as both the amp and the GS112 are known to be a bit midshy.
But I like it better that way, whereas normally I am all about low mids.

(sorry for the phine pic!)

OK, back from first band rehearsal with the Fathom + 2x GS112 (OEM speakers).

As I anticipated, this combination does not work for me at all!!!
mid shy amp + mid shy cabs =
Rather a classic situation: what sounds great on their own gets buried in the mix.

Next week I'll be trying one of the cabs with the DeltaLite speaker and as an alternative a friend's db112.

I really want to keeep this amp as it weighs only half a db751...

Yeah, I got rid of my GS112's for that very reason a while back.

Interestingly however, I've recently used my Fathom/M6 with a somewhat scooped speaker set and it was my first opportunity to use one of the voicing settings. I'd be VERY interested to hear your opinion of the Fathom/M6 with the GS112's using Voicing #4 (narrow mid boost). I did that with the somewhat scooped set recently and it came alive in a big way.

I tried both mid boost voicings (#4 & #5), even with the mid pot cranked to 3 o'clock. Lows and highs were a bit cut.
The bass I used was my Sadowsky PJ with a slight bass boost, using alternatively 75% P or "typical Jaco J" PU.

Even these settings sounded more or less mid scooped.

What speaker did you use?

I gotta agree with Vic here. I used to own a pair of GS112s and definetly mid shy, modern scooped sound. Don't own them anymore. To my ear the M6 is not mid shy though. I believe bassgear did a test on this with all the filter selections so you can see how it looks on the scope. I have used my M6 with my EPI UL 410 several times and I would say it is more scooped then flat and have used setting 3 with great success, but when I need the extra punch I take it to 4. I would guess with the extra booty of the GS112s and the full low end on the M6 that you should follow Vics suggestion of using #4 and I would go so fars as to dail the bass down to about 10 and see if that doesn't help. Don't give up yet.

WOW!!!

Dang, I remember the GS's being scooped, but that's significant as heck. Definitely post up with the DB's. From what I've heard (no personal experience) that should match up much better.

I won't !!!
I'll try to further cut the lows, and boost the mids even more.

I will be experimenting with a db112 and a DeltaLite loaded GS next week.

I'm guessing changing the driver in the GS won't really make a huge difference, but I am interested to hear what your results are.

Well, using a DeltaLite 2512 II definitely gives a more balanced sound. I really like these drivers in the GS.
My MB SA450/2xGS112 (DeltaLites) sounds great (but can't do 2 ohms).

I guess I have to re-convert one additional GS back to Deltas.

I'll report back in a week.

Not getting any hits on the thread I started, so i'll try here.
Have any of you compared the PH cabs, mainly the 215, to the Berg NV cabs?
I have a Berg NV425 paired with my Titan V12, but am wondering if a switch to the Mesa PH215 would be worthwhile.
Thanks for any input.

I can't directly answer your question, but I do know those NV cabs are awesome, and if they're giving you the tone you want, stick with it. GAS is a terrible thing, it makes us always want something else. But if you got something that works, don't try to fix it.

Ok, I've been wondering about these, how is it?

It just did its first gig last night. I'm very impressed. I'm not very good at describing tone, but it was very quick and responsive. Gain was set a bit past noon, maybe 12:30. Bass, mid & treble all at noon. Graphic EQ bypassed. No compression. Voice filter on 4 (midrange boost centered at 370Hz).

Those settings gave me a very tight low end, obviously a midrange hump, and very smooth highs. We played in a mid-sized club, and I never had the volume past 9 o'clock. I'm up against 3 very loud, distorted guitars, a hard hitting drummer, two vocalists, and keyboards. A rather dense mix. This amp seems freakishly loud for its power rating. I liked what I heard so much, I don't know if I'll ever engage the graphic EQ. It was that good.

Keep in mind this was its first gig, and I'm still in the honeymoon phase. :) But again, I'm really impressed with what I heard and felt. My tone was fantastic, and the notes were hitting with a great deal of authority. I don't think I've ever had it so easy finding the tone I was looking for.

Sounds like my experience with (Vic's) Fathom/M6.

Its hard to say which one I want. I am not a compressor user, but the graphic eq might be nice...

Decisions.... :)
