Mesa/Boogie Titan V12 megathread!

I posted this in the Mesa Club thread , but I drove down to Milwaukee two days ago (Friday) and gave the music store back the loaner Silver-Faced and finally got my new Black-Faced Titan that was from the final production run. It was about an 8 hour round trip and on only 4 hours of sleep - What a long day!! It was worth it though. ;)
Quick question for you Titan users. I usually don't use a boost or the Solo feature as it is called on the Titan. When I got the Silver-Faced Titan on loan I skimmed through the owners manual and I thought that the two dials on the far right hand side of the amp were for each dedicated for boosting the channels separately - channel 1 for one dial and boosting channel 2 with the other dial. As it turns out the top dial (Solo) boosts both channels and the bottom dial (Output) is another master volume. I'm a little confused with having two master volumes and where I should set them. How do you fellow Titan users set both masters , and do you use the Solo feature at all?? Thanks! -- Pedulla-Player

As I said before - I just got the new Black-Faced Titan Friday , and I had practice most of the day Saturday and I just used a small practice amp , so i really didn't get a chance to mess with the Titan until last night and today.

When I turn the Titan on with the standby switch on , like the manual says , there is a strange electronic crackling noise (hard to describe the sound) that goes through my PH412 speaker cab a few seconds after the amp fires up. It causes the speakers to move quite a bit and I didn't experience this with the Silver-Faced that I was borrowing. Does anybody else experience this?? I'm wondering if I should plug the speaker cab in after the amp has been turned on for a few minutes. If I didn't live three and a half hours from the store (the nearest Mesa dealer) that I bought the Titan from I'd take it to the store and have them check it out. I'm kinda bummed out about this because it doesn't seem right and I live so far from the store and I don't want to make another 8 hour round trip next weekend.
Any suggestions?? Pedulla-Player

It would seem to make the most sense to just ship it to the store. I seriously doubt they'll attempt to do an on-the-spot repair while you wait.

When you turn the power on, is the 'standby' switch in the off position? I turn the power on and let it run for 30 seconds or so before flipping the standby switch on. You shouldn't get any noise doing it this way. If you do, something's wrong.

When I said that I turn the Titan on with the Standby swith on - I should have said that I turn it on with the amp in standby mode. A few seconds after I turn the amp on I get an electronic sounding crackling noise through my speaker cab that makes the speakers move. I wait a good minute before I take the amp out of standby mode , but the noise happens while in standby mode. The noise happens when I'm plugging in directly into an outlet , and when I'm running through my Fuhrman power condition. The power conditioner doesn't help the problem. I'm thinking that there is something wrong because the Silver-Faced Tiatn that I was borrowing didn't do this. If I ship the head to the music store I won't have anything to play through - at least they will give me a loaner to use until mine is fixed. I just don't want to do that drive again anytime soon. It costed me $75 in gas in my Chevy Blazer - not to mention it took the whole day.

Apparently you should've done a full test before taking possession just to make sure it works. Hindsight... Anyway, your amp shouldn't be making that noise. You can phone MESA directly and explain the scenario of your distance and the noise and see what they say. I can power mine on NOT in standby and all I can hear are the fans running. Often crackly noise, hum, crackly decay on your notes (pretty much all types of noises) are often due to tubes. However, I would think that being in standby would kill all sound going from the input boards to the output, thus likely indicating some output section issue. But that's just my guess, I really don't know how standby works in this amp. Either way their phone tech support is always my first stop for questions. Note phone support has very specific hours M-Thu, closed totally the rest of the time.

Instead of dealing with trying to get the electronic crackling noise problem fixed on my new Black-faced Titan , I decided to just return it and get the Silver-faced Titan that I was borrowing. I wanted the Black-faced Titan because I thought that it looked a little better and I wanted the extra fan mod.
After running into the problem with my new Black-faced Titan I got to thinking that the Silver-faced is still a nice looking head , and that I won't be running at 2 Ohms or keeping it in a tight rack so it shouldn't over-heat on me. It never felt warm at any time that I used it for a couple gigs and practices.
A couple other issues besides the crackling noise that made me decide to swap back to the silver-faced Titan. With the Silver-faced I finally found the tone that I was searching for for years!! For some reason I could not find that tone with the Black-faced(?). I'm not saying that the Black-faced sounds bad or anything , but try as I might I could not find the sweet spot to achieve the tone that I got out of the Silver-faced. Did they change anything with the electronics on the new Titans?? Another reason I'm going back to the Silver-faced is because it performed flawlessly with no issues - unlike the new Black-faced. And my final reason I decided to go back to the Silver-faced is because it's a couple hundred dollars cheaper. Bummer thing is - One more 8 hour round trip to Milwaukee. True that we could ship them to each other , but there are a couple other things that I need to take care of while I'm at the store. Thanks for everyone's advice about the Black-faced , but I decided that the Silver-faced sounded better and had no issue - A proven performer.

Every amp problem I've ever personally had with any of my stuff was due to tubes. I'd probably guess that's the difference in the sound, and probably the crackling noise. Otherwise I don't know enough about the build of the units to explain any of what you're experiencing. Note that at least locally to me there's two independent but authorized Mesa repair shops. So if you ever do run into problems I'd check with Mesa to see who might be closer to you and be able to do warranty work.

The cabs mixed together sound great using the Titan. When I use both amps with all three cabs...I will often use my sansamp V1 Pedal to add a little grind to one of the amps and the other I leave loud and clean...and the mix turns out really nice, warm ,deep and throttles!! Lovin my Mesa amps and thier cab buddies...Peace...DAcat :cool:

not sure if that's a typo or not
but the WA is not gonna give that kinda power

I just thought that the V12 is a much better match power wise to the 412.

I was wondering about this....with this much juice, why not two large 8ohm cabs? I'm so close I can smell it...located a V12 I'm going to buy. Wanted an 810, but thinking why stop at just one 4ohm cab....:rollno:

I posted a couple not too long ago. They're floating around TB somewhere. I'll try to get a new photo tomorrow night and post it here. Hopefully, I'll remember...I stay crazy busy with my life outside of bass.

On reading through the the Mega Walkabout Thread the past couple years, its been mentioned at least a couple times that the WA puts out around 450 Watts @ 2 ohms!! Peace...DAcat :cool:

My Silver Faced Titan has never made any kind of noise when turning it from Off => On... or from Off =>Standby=> On. I would definatly call Mesa CS. Its kinda easy to lose "your Tone" till yoou get used to this amp and can find it again...there are aso many tonal possibilities I strongly reccomend that you have a notebook to record your favorite settings at first...I am still finding new settings I like and writing them down if I want to be sure I can find them again...Peace...DAcat :cool:

yes around 450w @ 2ohm total ... not to each cab ...

Hey babebambi...thanks for bringing that to my attention...I don't have a manual since my WA is a used one, that says what each channel puts out, so I was making an assumption...and ... Well, my wires could have been crossed on this one :confused:...I'm sure not tryin to spread any disinformation :ninja:...I'll check in with the friends on the WA forum...in any case, the great thing:) about TB is that I'm sure someone :hiding: who knows for sure will be chiming in real soon with the answer:D...Peace...DAcat :cool:
