Mesa/Boogie Titan V12 megathread!

Update on my Mesa Titan V12
- works well with 4 ohm speaker and medium workload
- goes into output protection with 4 ohm and heavy workload and after some minutes of playing
- goes into output protection with 2 ohm and after few minutes of playing

Currently in discussion with mesa tech support partner in europe how to update the power amp.

That sucks. The update is expensive when done out of warranty. But, IMHO, it should be considered essential if you push your Titan hard.

Ensuring your Titan can breath and installing an extra fan that compliments the amp's natural air flow may help, but the update resolves some major issues that are well beyond enhancing the amp's thermal management capabilities. Once these issues begin to occur, the amp is predispositioned to overheating and is more likely to have a major melt down.

I am tempted to spend the cash on mine and I just play in the basement and have not had any shutdowns. It's an awesome amp with a unique voice, so I want to ensure it lasts for a good long time. Also probably good to get the update done while the parts are still available.

Sorry your amp is having problems and good luck with a speedy repair.

I don't think he is facing overheating issues as the Amp comes back to life. My guess is the amp sits in a too narrow rack. That's what I'm guessing as I faced the exact same issue with both my titans sitting in a rack without a fan to pull the air out. I've also noticed the updated titan seems more sensitive to that. It was cutting out way before the non updated one sitting in the same rack, same volume, same room.
May we have pictures of the Amp?

Sounds like your amp is overheating and the protection is shutting it down. First thing is to be sure the fan is working. If it is and has not been updated, that could very well be the problem. Call the factory for information on the updates.

Just a thought... Are you using a power conditioner? If so make sure it has enough amperage. I don't use conditioners, but my friend I sold my Titan to did and his conditioner only allowed 15amps, and if I remember right the Titan will draw almost 20a, and when he loaded the head to 2ohm it would trip. So he eliminated the conditioner and issue went away.

to the different questions:
- amp not build into rack, just sitting on the cab
- fan working (at 2 Ohm, the amp goes really fast into protection)
- 4/2 Ohm switch always engaged appropriately, thanks
- yes, I'm pushing it really hard
- no power conditioner in sight
- limited current supply? well, the Strategy 8:88 is happy with it

Has anyone swapped the preamp tubes in this amp? I am wondering if a different set of tubes would smooth out the overdrive a bit. I play Warwick basses (which are a little aggressive to my ears without OD help), and would like a little creamier tone.

Maybe I just play too hard...:D

I like running the OD channel just below breakup. IMHO this make's it sound and feel more like an all tube amp. It would be nice if the transition from clean to dirty was a little less abrupt though.

I find that the variable midrange is definitely your best friend when dialing in the overdrive.

I have a line on one (silverface) for $750 without the footswitch.
Thoughts?
I need to go back and read through the thread on the update etc....
