Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread 8

brother WA users, I have strayed from the righteous WA path recently with an Ampeg PF500/115HE rig (just to get a bit more power, headroom and volume....I swear) and it was working out ok, but last night the durned thing crapped out on me in the last 3 songs of the night.

I dealt with the Ampeg's differences ok, but always preferred the WA tone. So, I am back and I think I will be trying the WA on top of the Ampeg PF115HE cab (450w 15 + horn).

I just can't abide an amp that will crap out on a gig when it is really not being pushed. The WA never missed a beat in 6 years of gigs and rehearsals, so I am going back to old faithful.

One way to go would be to change out the 4ohm drivers in my WA cabs (I have 2, a WA 1x12 and a Scout 1x12) to 8ohm drivers to get to 4ohm with both cabs. I had used the WA @ 2ohms (2 x 4ohm) but had started to feel as if the sound was getting kind of mushy.

The other route I am considering is using more drivers to get the most out of the WA 300w. The Berg AE112's seem to get a lot of love from WA users. Anyone use a 15 cab that they really like and would recommend ?

I'm all ears and am humbly returning to the fold :cool:

cool, I'll look forward to your report on that combination.

I will also use my WA with the 115HE in rehearsal too.

I need to look and see it there is any way to attach the WA to the PF cab top cover so I can use it in a "fliptop" type config. I don't think there is enough clearance though.

if it did work, what would that mashup be called ...... Walkabout-top ? :D

I just recently got a Scout 15 extension cab and used it on a second gig last night. I'm really digging the setup! I'm finding it to be a great standalone cab that delivers a nice, round tone that can be very vintage or much cleaner depending on how you set the amp.

Loving the WA I got last week so far. That semi-parametric EQ is quite incredible. It's really amazing how much difference a simple cut or boost makes in the overall sound.

One question: I have one of the earlier generations of the amp, with two separate inputs for active and passive. Every time I power mine up, it takes 5-10 seconds of the amp being on before sound comes out. Is that normal? Do you guys experience the same thing? I'm guessing it just has to warm up, but you never know.

My one complaint after hauling it to the gig last night and then back home is why oh why Mesa put the one single handle on one side? It makes carrying a fairly lightweight cab a real chore. I mean the headcase has recessed handles on both sides but the cabinet has one single leather handle? :spit:

Has anyone every mounted a matching one on the other side?

well, I used to have a Scout 15 myself about 2 years ago. Stupidly I sold it when I went to work outside the US for a while.

anyway, I understand what you are saying about the Scout 15 being a bit unwieldy with the single handle. What I did (and still do) with my Walkabout/Scout gear is attach the Mesa "tone luggage" brackets and use the wheeled cart to move them. Not a handle as you are considering, but it works pretty well for me. Not very good on rough gravel or cobbled streets though - IME/IMO.

I'm using mine with a Greenboy/Arnopol composite Bassic 15. It has a single, full range Faital 15, is 4 Ohms (also available in 8) and handles the WA output well. It weighs UNDER 25 LBS and sounds great. Pretty old-school without the tweeter and has excellent midrange articulation. It's not a 1 hand carry; it's an underhand throw!

I used to be a baseball fan, back when I was growing up in Montreal and the Expos lost to LA in the final game of a strike-shortened season........I think it was the Cretaceous period:p. I remember the Pirates had a submarine pitcher named Kent Tekulve back then....with that form I could probably take out 2 guitar players, a bartender and 2 from the dance floor with my Bassic:D


but I love the cab too much to throw it!

Jarry Park days? I used to love going to see the Expos, before the ill judged move to the Big Owe. The vendor that famously used to throw hot dogs to the fans across the rows would have had a field day tossing cabs.

I'm only 49, so I'm mainly post Jarry Park, but I did catch a couple of games there when I was so young I have no real memories of them. FWIW my uncle moved to Montreal in the 50s to play AAA ball when the Montreal Royals were the farm team for the BROOKLYN dodgers-he played with Jackie Robinson. That's how my mother's side of the family ended up in Canada. My uncle couldn't hit well enough to go to the Big Show, but settled here and brought up the whole fam damily:p

Guys,

I just wanted to let everybody know that Mesa Hollywood fixes any amp that mesa has built for a $50.00 flat rate plus parts, and they don't try to sell you tubes every time the fix something.

Really great service there. I took my walkabout to get fixed there and some of the IC's had burned out or something and the repairs were 60 dollars. I took my Mesa Bass Buster because it was making a horrible noise and no bass sound was coming through, that repair was $55.00 So, for you guys that live in the area, and those that live away you could probably ship your amps to the store. Their normal turn around is approx. 1 week.

lomo, I'm (a bit) younger than you, but when I lived in Malone I used to go to Expos games at Parc Jarry.

The venue also hosted concerts. I recall Supertramp and Genesis there. Although neither bassist used a Walkabout, it was the sort of venue that would have been perfect for a Walkabout DI'ed through the PA.
