Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

I have the extension/standalone cab. the handle is on one side, so I can't think of a reason you could not put one on the other side. However, I recall Mesa wouldn't do this on someone's custom shop order. It gives me pause if there is some reason I shouldn't drill into the other side for any reason.
I don't think Mesa really does "custom" orders in that sense, only custom finishes. As far as I can see the only difference between the two sides is the tweeter. East enough to remove the speaker and check!

Would using the EQ section to dial back 30 or 40 Hertz be basically the same thing as using an HPF?
Last night, I used my WA head and two cabs to play as house bassist at a local open mic. I was told there was too much boom in the room; I cut at about 80hz/3db and the sound was perfect.
That simple little parametric EQ is gold if you know how to use it.

Thanks! Yea, a piece of black-painted plywood, with a block of foam w/cutout for handle, sounds like a workable solution - just would need to locate a suitable block of foam in right density to support the 13 lb. WA amp.
I don't have any foam like that on hand - are there any places that actually sell blocks of foam that I could use - where would be a good source to get this?

Try any craft store; in Texas we have Michael's and Hobby Lobby.

Finally some time to play around with my new WA 15 this weekend.
Love the sound!!!
And I really love the high quality feeling of everything on and about the WA.
Except the fan is loud when you're playing around by yourself (as you guys already have mentioned), but with the band in a couple of days I can´t imagine it will be a problem.
Sometimes Wednesday night can´t come fast enough....

Wait 'til you're over 50 and been playing since jr high. The fan isn't nearly as loud as the tinnitus ringing in your head! :rollno:
I'm 57......used to play with a drummer in the 80's that always had a large Zildjan ride on my side of his kit. Angled straight to me ear. Lost something in those years. I do have some background noise in my ears in a quiet place, normal... So it's no good focusing on that. My wife complained about ringing noise in her ears, the doctor asked her if she was worried and troubled about life.....

I'm back in people. Just bought a black face model with gig bag that should be here next week. I figure I will still use my D800 for most things but I can't be without a Walkabout. I sold my first one a few years ago. It's one of the few pieces of gear that I regret selling enough to buy again. :rollno: :D

It's different enough from my D800+ that I enjoy both flavors.

I agree. The D800 is great and does everything I need it to but the WA tone is something special. For cabbage I will be using a Bergantino NV610 or CN212 depsnding on the situation. I know what the WA/NV610 combo sounds like and I'm really looking forward to using that again.

Watch, now Mesa will come out with a bigger WA or something else new that I have to have. I'll buy it anyway. :D

Welcome back to the heard, metron. :woot:
And, yes, I did spell that correctly. ;)

Has anyone had repeat problems with the MOSFET power section?

The first time it burned out I was running the amp at 2ohms with an extension cab. I can take that I abused it a bit by running it too warm. $300 later to get the MOSFETs replaced by a certified Mesa tech.

BUT...

The second time I was running it about half master volume, just the combo, with the EQ very flat. This was the first time running the amp at gigging volumes since the repair. Pictures below for fun?

Well I received my WA. Unfortunately the seller basically just put it in the gig bag then into the box. There were maybe 6 of the small sized air bags for cushion in the box. The transformer nut ended up coming a little loose so that was bouncing around and dented the bottom a little. There was at least one good drop as well because the heat sink/mosfet assembly is askew with small dents on the bottom where the board mounts are attached to the chassis. It's disappointing but it might still work fine. It turns on anyway. All visible solder connections look ok and the amp is clean and in great condition besides what I mentioned. I have to wait until rehearsal tonight to find out if it's fully functional. Maybe it was like that before but there were no pics of the bottom of the amp in the sale ad.

Ugh, check to see if the sheet metal for the transformer bolt got damaged from a fall. The clearance dimple should be symmetrical, if not, the sheet metal is deformed and that's why the nut is loose, the sheet metal has stretched. This is the usual cause of loose (toroidal) transformers.

Yep it is a little deformed all around the dimple. I tightened it myself so it's snug now but... ugh is right.
