Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

Greetings my walkabout brethren,

I've been steady rockin my walkabout since 2009. Recently, however, I've been having some issues with her. My 8ohm walkabout has been pushing a 4ohm powerhouse 4x10 for a couple years now without trouble and I never have the master vol above 10-11 oclock and the gain always stays steady around 1 oclock. Over the last couple months It's been going into overheat mode, I think. Basically it just shuts down after a couple hours of use. Never had the problem in the past and I always put it through about the same paces.

My warranty ran out in June. I left it with a local non-authorized repair shop to take a look and they couldn't get it to reproduce what it's been doing to me. They cleaned it up and gave it back no charge. I never sent it back to mesa for any of the updates (ie messed up fx loop which I've had patch cabled since I got it) because it's my only head and I've been steady using it for gigs and rehearsals weekly.

The fan seems to be working fine. I really don't know what else I can troubleshoot to try and sort this out. If I do send it to Mesa, what kind of turn around time / service can I expect? I am someone tech savy and would be willing to try anything you guys could suggest.

Kinda unclear if you meant you had a walkabout combo that you've connected a PH410 too only and not use the walkabout speaker OR if your connectiong both cabs to have a final load impedence to be 2.66 ohms. In any case, you said you left it with a tech and he was unable to reproduce what it was doing....did you leave your entire setup with him or just the amp? if it's just the head, it could be worth getting your cabs looked at too......perhaps a driver is bad causing the meltdown to the amp.

Just the head to the ph410. I did not leave my entire setup as I assumed the little walkabout could do no harm to the PH. Would a bad driver cause a meltdown over a long session? Thanks for the input! I may just drop the whole setup off. Just can't really be without it !

Thanks nemo! Next week at practice I will try this out. I just assumed it would pop. Is this feature unique to Mesa or have I been working under a false assumption for years?

I'm going to make it a mission to unplug everything I see!

Thanks for the info, McFarlin! Now I know that I don't have to mod my amp - - saves me some dollars and keeps it stock.

Sorry if this has already been covered; I tried a search. What is the switch near the speaker output jacks? To set ohms of your cab maybe?

The Carbine amps have a 2-ohm toggle switch, which activates a safety circuit for lower-impedance setups (2.67 ohm, 2 ohm, etc.). That one looks to be an "aftermarket" install, as if it wasn't originally there. Perhaps a safety circuit was installed? I'd check with Mesa.

Because the fan doesn't have a thermistor to turn it off and on "as needed," it's on all the time.
In some studio uses, it would be nice to turn it off; though, perhaps, not terribly recommended.
