Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

Not on a Walkabout, which comes with a fan, but I know a guy who put a switchable/variable speed fan on some nuclear-powered homemade amp.

I'm waiting for an upgrade switch so I can toggle another 300w... ooo, ooo.... or a three-position toggle for 900w! :eek:

Yeah, 900w.
Yesterday I found a local used Streamliner and bought it just to remember what it's like to have more headroom. And I dig it.
The Streamliner doesn't gel with OD pedals like the WA (for me, no SS amp has), but I definitely feel the extra headroom. Why can't we have it all?

:smug: I was borderline trolling there... I like to push Chef's buttons with that one, the Super-Walkabout being something of a unicorn, and a subject of great consternation here. I dig the headroom too, but 900w is literally unusable to this weekend warrior. 600w... well, okay maybe, but pass the earplugs. :bag:

So as far as I can tell I just bought the last Walkabout Scout 1x15 combo that Mesa ever produced. Been saving up for one for a while now and Full compass still had it listed on their site so I ordered it. Got a call that Mesa had no more 4ohm drivers left so I'd have to take the 8ohm version if I wanted it. Went ahead with it.

A/B-ing it with my friend's 4ohm 1x15 I can't tell much of a difference at the volumes I'm accustomed to playing at. Overall very happy!

I have a Walkabout Scout cabinet (I pulled the head out and use it with lighter speakers) with a 4 ohm 15" speaker in it. Let me know if you are interested in it.

As Chef noted, not recommended running without the fan. The fact that it has that switch makes me shy away from it, since I don't know how often it was run without the fan on and for how long. I assume the switch voids the warranty.

I'm thinking of getting a second Walkabout; I'll leave one at the practice space. Sometimes I like to swap between it and my SVT-VR.

I've used both an Ampeg 810 and my Berg 610 with mine and it is a great combo. As long as you aren't worried about completely clean headroom it can get super loud. The louder the more mid-heavy and compressed it gets, which matches well with the Ampeg fridge tone. I actually like it best pushed like that!

I'm hoping to close a deal for a Scout 15 combo cab today as well... the plan being to use it alternately with the two Scout 12's I currently use.

.. And it's really good! Best I've heard myself with this loudish band (on the DB) for a while. Being able to tilt the combo back makes a huge difference. Bumped the mids a bit for some growl to cut through and it sat nicely. I'll have to experiment with it solo - I think exposing the passive driver when tilted back brings out the mids a bit too.

I had a Scout 15 for a while. IMO/IME, it was actually a better cab for the WA as it got the most out of the WA 300w @ 4ohms. It can get a bit flubby if you don't watch the low EQ range.

I don't recall it being heavy as much as it was kind of largish for a portable combo rig. In fact, my memory of it was as a fairly light 1x15 cab with a tweet (and a passive radiator too).

I'm wondering how the Scout 15 will do with amping the upright...? Usually, I just use the Scout 12 combo, with a phase-reversable tube pre, and/or a DTar Equinox, with notch filters and a parametric eq. (but then again, I'm only using it for a stage monitor, and sending the DI to the house)

Yeah last night I was using the upright through the Scout 15 and it was great. TBH I think a lot of it had to do with the form factor - not necessarily the cab itself. You can tilt back a combo which you can't do with head + cab. So having it aimed at my ears rather than my knees helped a lot. I'm pre-ing it with the FDeck HPF into an Empress para EQ. The Empress is great for feedback rejection - really surgical EQ notching.

I checked Mesa/Boogie's web site yesterday and the Scout is no longer listed -- apparently only the Walkabout head is being produced now.

Had I thought it out more carefully, I might have bought the head without the cab and used it with speakers I had at the time (which I traded in on the WAS).

I see the Scouts still listed. They're under Bass Amplifiers, but you have to scroll the list down a bit...
