Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

I run my WA through the PH 4x12......it makes that 13 lb.amp sound like a monster! I absolutely love the tone of those two combined. We played an outdoor show a few weeks ago and had plenty of volume with that setup as well. I feel certain you'll love it. I don't have mine in a rack case- it looks funny,that small amp on the huge cabinet! Hahaha....like they say-looks aren't everything.

I'm loving it lp... but you were absoluetly right - it's pretty hefty with the WA head docked. I decided to part with the oldest of my 3 Scout 12's after playing your old 15.

I need your advice about which new cabinet I should get to use with my Walkabout head.
I currently use a Walkabout Scout 12. I like it very much, but seems a bit boomy sometimes.

Probably saying what you already know, but those cabs are all pretty different. Out of those three the CN should be the closest to "hi-fi". The NV115 should be farthest from that.
The NV will probably give you the lowest perceived volume with the WA's 165W, the ML cabs should seem the loudest (CN and ML are considered more efficient, but the ML box size and 6" driver should take you a bit farther in output).
I have one ML112 and the Walkabout at 8ohms can really push that thing if you don't mind keeping your gain around or above noon.
The ML112 is certainly more clear and punchy than a Scout cab.
And I bet the WA sounds great through the Berg stuff. There are several guys here using the WA with a CN212 and they seem to love it.
If efficiency and weight weren't major factors for me I would give that NV cab a try.

Many have remarked that the 15 would be a lot more manageable with PA speaker-style side handles, but Mesa/Boogie won't make the change. I have hoisted that thing over fences and carried it down stairs, and I have had enough, even though it sounds gorgeous. My G-B speakers have a smaller footprint as well as being lighter, and the signature WA sound is still there, if slightly diminished.
Here's a conundrum: M/B lists the WAS 1x15 at 65 lb, the head itself at 13 lb, but the scales said the box was 44 lb. I'm quite sure they weren't trying to under-bill me. Maybe the air in Petaluma is heavier, and when I took out the head, it was replaced with Texas air?

I have experience with the CN212, NV115 and ML-112. The CN212 sounds great, but it will be the more clear, accurate, and, I suppose, "Hi-Fi" of the group. Not at all wimpy, though. The NV115 is, tonally, one of my favorite cab pairings. It has warmth and punch for days, but not a lot of overall SPL with the WalkAbout. Two cabs helps a lot, but even so, the NV115 definitely craves a lot of power (or tube power). The ML-112 does have a few peaks and valleys in its frequency response, but I love how they line up with the WalkAbout (and bass guitar, in general). Two ML-112's will really help you get the most out of the WalkAbout's output. I dig this combo a lot, and that's what I would probably suggest you try out first.
In this same boat. I talked to Roger at Baer and am waiting on the version II to hit the streets in a week or 2.

Got my 4x12 today. Handles my low string like nothing. Actually like it better than my old svt-810.
Very impressed with how much headroom I'm getting from the walkabout too. At least enough to keep me from getting a strategy or meatsmoke anytime soon..
Yep,the WA really sounds sweet through the 4x12. I found that even pushing the gain up around 2-3 still keeps it pretty clean,maybe just a hint of fur,which suits me fine. Between my Prodigy,D180 and the WalkAbout,I find myself resorting to the WA 90% of the time for shows.

Don't get me wrong,the Prodigy is a great sounding amp,but one thing I noticed with it is with my low B,which is dropped to A flat,sometimes it gets boomy. With the WA,I can dial that out with the parametric if need be. I prefer the preamp overdrive on the WA better than the Prodigy also. They are both fabulous amps for sure. There are days that I can't decide which amp to play though,haha. Maybe I'll sell the Prodigy to help make things easier..lol
I ran a WA12 for a long time (6 years) and started to run out of usable volume on a lot of my gigs. I eventually ended up with a CN212 to pair with my WA head and could not be happier.
I tried the NV115 with the WA, in fact when I went to my local Mesa dealer (Gelb in Redwood City, CA), I fully intended to get the NV115 cab. After an hour of side by side comparison, I went with the CN212. Clean yes, but really gets the most out of the WA 300w@4ohms, and the CN212 really gets the WA's warmth across in a great way too with plenty of punch. I liked it as a single cab, do-it-all (at least most) rig, and it has proven itself again and again for me in the year that I have used it.
The NV115 just did not impress me with its natural voice (kind of hollow sounding to me) and it did not make the most out of the WA power (being less efficient than the CN212). I can see where 2 NV115's would kill with the WA, but that was way more cab than I wanted and the cost differential bewteen 1 CN212 and 2 NV115's did not make any sense to me.
I have no experience with the Baer cabs, so I can't comment.
good luck with your search. The WA is a killer amp and really shines with the right multi-driver cab.
That's some looowww tuning! I thought I was going low (A). What size gauge on your b string?
Good to hear cause I was getting tempted on getting one of those all tube mesa heads. I gotta start messing with the para more often.

Has anyone ever tried sealing the cab on their combo by replacing the grille on the radiator with a piece of ply?
I'm thinking of trying it on the 15 to control the lows. hmmm.
