Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

Thank you guys, it is already out of my hands so I can't check the fx loop. This repairman is a legend, but if needed, we will contact the Czech authorized service, indeed.
All repair guys are legends... some good legends and some that are legendary for an entirely different reason ;)

So I bought a blackface Walkabout from peteybass (great TB'er) a few days ago, and I just can't stop playing it!!! It has the updates done, so I don't know if thats what it is, but I find it to be really powerful at 8ohm through my 3015 equipped 1x15. I play a Mesa 400 (kt88's) on big stages, and was using a PF500 as my club amp until it crapped out, so I was just looking for a small amp with tone. WOW, every bit as powerful, if not more, than the higher rated PF500 and far better PHAT tone. Like, I can't stop messing with it PHAT tone. 69 P bass, flats, all kinds of grunt and punch. 70's jazz w/nordy's, steel rounds, dang- just unreal. This little monster might be giving my overworked Mesa 400 some well deserved pasture time, especially with another 1x15 @ 4ohms. I see what all the fuss is about....

Can't go wrong with a report like that! I've had three silver WA's before and loved their tone, but depending on the club they were teetering on not enough juice with my PH212, but both my Bass 400 and Strategy are way overkill. So I recently got a D800 and while it has plenty, it just doesn't have that sweet ballsy tone the WA's do and I miss that.

I just received a fully warrantied 3015 from Eminence (kudos to their customer service) and re-assembled my other 1x15. So- stacked 2x115's, at 4 ohms, is just so sweet with the Walkabout. I'm learning the EQ more now and found a little cut at 30hz-40hz on the parametric tightens up the bottom nicely, and gives the mids more room to breath. If you have 2 old Mesa 15's sitting around, you might try that to see if you get that little extra. I'm playing with the band on the 28th, then I'll report back.

Just played 4 hours with the band. Not gonna go long winded here, because there are thousands of posts here already glowing over the WA. But I have to say that this was the most satisfied with my tone I have ever been, live with a band. I was so impressed by how present it was in the mix, without being overbearing. The texture, or "hair" on the tone is just so right, while maintaining a heavy, tight bottom. I played my P bass, GHS precision flats, EQ- Bass 12:30, Mids 11:30, Treble 1:00, Gain 1:00, Master 10:30, parametric eq all flat except for a small cut at 35hz. My cab is a D.I.Y. 1x15 w/ Eminence 3015. Its basically a copy of an Uber 1x15, or a Barefaced compact. It was plenty loud, with headroom to spare, and we aren't the quietest band either. I'm really just floored by what I heard tonight, and the band was pumped too.

With those settings you was hitting it a bit, powerwise, and it surely was adding a fair bit of tube colour and compression....it sounds big and glorious that way. It sounds glorious just about always. To me, it's always surprising how good the amp sounds with the band even without having a big humbrella of mids or sharp high mids or tighter lows. I mean, the Wa, set "neutral", with mids at 10 o clock, bass and treble at noon, is big, big big in the lows, clear and rich in the midrange, sort of woody, and has just a tiny bit of hair in the highs. BUT, it is capable to not only be heard, but also to punch and cut, even without pushing the input stage too much. It's quite a bit of a miracle, if you ask me. After having played tons if SS or class D stuff, even aggressively voiced, after having tried to obtain a coherent and bold bass tone capable to cut, I came to the WA and BAM...the magic was there. Effortless, pure, convincing. One of the best amps on the planet.

The WalkAbout has absolutely NOT been discontinued! Thanks!

Hello. Is the WalkAbout discontinued now, over a year on?

I ask because I am wondering whether this one for sale is the last NOS black WalkAbout head available.

There were two there until recently. Now there's only the one. Apart from others for sale as new in the headcase, that's the only example I can find. Thanks.

Where I come from, that's a "yes". :D

It was not my intent to corner Mesa Boogie into answering. I just wanted to know, and I assumed that others would be interested, too.

WalkAbout collectors and aficionados, heads up: there is at least a decent chance that no more WalkAbout heads will be made. Though not surprising, if true then it is notable for being the end of a 10-year era of a much loved bass amplifier.

The WA is still going as it is still promoted on Mesa's website. Guitar Center is not carrying them any more but Sweetwater does.

Hello. Yes, there is unsold stock around. But I am inclined to believe that no new WalkAbouts will be made. As for the Mesa Boogie website, the legacy product pages remain just to help the unsold stock stay relevant... would be my guess.

Sorry, I missed this question...

Walkabouts are still being made, but like any 10 year old product by any company, at some point it's bound to be retired.

By chance do you have some specific suggestions for its replacement, or are you asking the question just because?

I'm not the guy who asked about WA retirement, but I can ask Mesa for a replacement with two changes, hopefully not too early anyway. Please keep the exact SAME tone and form factor, with more power on tap and less fan noise.

If Mesa is taking suggestions, it would be great to better understand what makes the Walkabout unique in its ability to produce excellent tube gain vs. most other Mesa bass amps, where the gain knob doesn't really do anything, in terms of the sound. That is the "lightning in a bottle" that I wish Mesa could incorporate into other amps, especially a class-D high-output amp. A Subway D-800 with the Walkabout preamp section would be the answer to all of my amp needs.
