Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread part Four!

the 15, like your cl link, can be a little overly fat sounding sometimes...but, there's plenty of eq to fix that, generally.
the 15 is also on the large side for a combo, it's schleppable, but, not as nice as the 12, in that regard.

I should say that -- before I bought mine -- I saw a number of Scout 12 combos on eBay for *around* $750.
With that said, I picked mine up for a good deal under that. So good deals to be had, especially on older ones.

Some folks like it beefy, and my "too fat" might be your just right.
When I still ran Mesa cabs, I had a Scout 12, and a diesel 115 to put under it for bigger jobs. So, smaller combo for smaller jobs, bigger cab added for bigger jobs....

Mesa have a 5 year transferable warranty.
That one being so new might be worth some extra coin, since it shoudl have the bulk of that warranty in place.

Your advice fits, I had 18's and 15's before and I didn't like them. I have an Ampeg 8x10 powered by the Mesa 400+ and absolutely LOVE it. So, no, fat is not my thing.

I've a WA Scout 12" 8 ohm combo. Superb! & considering I'm in AUS- going by the $$$ I've seen lately I got a good deal.
But I often use mine with either a Bergantino NV215 & it sounds utterly wonderful. No boomy boomy, just sweet old school (I'm using a P with flats) bouncy tube sound!! SWEET!!!
I also use it sometimes with my Mark Bass HR151STD a 1x15" rear ported. Again it's sweet as & not al\t all boomy or too fat.
The WA scout CAB is a darn -whats the word??- not boomy, - it IS fat, it does sound 'vintage'(to my ears)- so I s;pose the 15" scout could be a "fatty"- but as Chef says- the WA's EQ section is darn powerful & U can dial in/out almost anything.
I'm GLAD I got the 8 ohm 12"-
1. as I LIKE 12"s a lot.
2. It'd be far easier for my needs-a 12" combo then the 15" combo
3. the 165w it gets at 8 ohms is about all the 1x12" driver in it could handle I reckon, & I can easily add on more 12"s or
15"s.

If only these walkabouts weren't so darn rare/insanely expensive over here! ive been wanting to try the head with my berg HS410 for a while now to compare with my Orange AD...if it is a tubey as its reputation indicates id ditch the orange and get on the walkabout!

They play wonderfully with everything I've ever tried it with. The EQ section will give you anything you want and overcome just about any cabs shortcomings.
IMO the 12 is preferrable UNLESS you want to run a single cab at gig volume, then a 4 Ohm 15 makes sense because it CAN swallow a full 300 watts. With minimal dialing down of the lows it's a beautiful thang IMO, but it's awkward to haul with that single leather handle......which is a bad joke IMO.

The WalkAbout is flat out great with the Take 5. FWIW, I would not really call the Take 5 "analytical," as some folks will take that to mean that it is on the "sterile, dry or unexciting" side. I'm guessing that you are referring to its clarity, but IME/IMHO, the Take 5 has an amazing mix of punch, fullness and clarity, with a bit of growl to it as well. It manages to sound "big" but still stays controlled.
IME, the WalkAbout is a great match for the Take 5.

punchy as all get out and LOUD. it smokes the ampeg 410hlf i was borrowing for a while in volume clarity and punch. though i do prefer to run the head with two TL606 cabs thats a bitch to move and takes up a lot more space in the van than the Berg. i run the gain pretty hot and dial back the tweet on the berg and get a really grindy thick tone.
George from bass gear direct is in Sydney the best advice i can give is book an appointment with him and try it out for yourself !

Hey all, I've had a Mesa WA redface for several years now, and love it! Tone tone tone! Anyway, I have seen other WA owners on this thread with the vintage headcase for their amps.
Looks awesome, and I like the protection offered too. My question: is the vintage headcase only available with the purchase of a new WA, or can you get it as a stand alone item? (I cannot find it anywhere I've looked online) I'm in the US - I know that helps with Mesa stuff. Any guidance would be great! Thanks in advance!

I've found some posts here and there but looking for the definitive lower-noise fan mod for my WA Scout. Any proven mods out there?
