Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Pt. Tres

I'd guess it has the same power amp as the Walkabout (I know the M6 and M-Pulse 600 have the same- just different drivers), which means it might also be 2 ohm-able...

As Alan has indicated, the M3 does not use the output section from the Walkabout, though they may be using some left-over transformers from the M-Pulse 360's.

I suppose there is also more to the heat stability and output than just the transformers anyway. I just know the transformer on my Carbine specifically said "M-Pulse 600" on it, so I figured they woudn't bring in a whole other line of components for another 300 watt amp if they already had the Walkabout ones available (and weren't the M-Pulse 360s slightly higher wattage?). It is obviously more than just a Walkabout-sized version of the M6 though, since it is full rackmount size...

Mine is the Walkabout Scout with the 1x15 speaker and 1x10 passive radiator. It's not exactly a feather. I have seen specs that say it's 56 lbs, but the strap handle makes it feel like a lot more.

Ah- I thought you were just referring to the Walkabout amp by itself vs. some of the lighter amps now available. I have heard the Scout 15 can be a bit of a drag to carry compared to the 12 (which I have), but I doubt you'd ever find any comparably voiced 15" combo that weighed much less! I have tried a few of the lighter Markbass combos as well as one of the new TC combos and wasn't really blown away when compared to the Walkabout...
Have you looked into any of the 112 Scout combo cabs? They can sell used for fairly cheap, and would help you cut some bulk and weight while retaining a good deal of the same tone (mine sounds much more like a 15 than a 12 to me).

I avoid the whole combo thing because I find them bulky.
I carry the walkabout head in the Mesa gig bag and I have 2 Aguilar GS 112's. Typically I only use 1 so, Bass on my back in gigbag, cab in 1 hand, head in the other...smooth and easy.

Mesa/Boogie is coy about the weight of their amplifiers (maybe because they tend to the heavy side). I believe the WAS 1x12 is only five lb lighter than the 1x15; the separate 1x12 cab is 41.

You're right: good bass amps aren't light. A friend bought a Genz-Benz Shuttle 6.0 210T rig, and it's STILL 41 lb, and STILL has that inane strap handle.

I had hopes that the M3 combo would give me something of the same sound for less weight, but I'll just resign myself to humping that beast around by its strap.

The single thing I WON'T give up is the tone!

Oh, I trusted it...
just an awkward carry, one handed, and a little more weight than I wanted, one handed.

Agreed. A single handle on anything in the 50lb range is a design "shortcoming" IMO, if not an outright flaw. For that matter, the single handle on the WA 15 combo (and Scout 15) is a bad joke. That's why I parted with my WA 15 cab, even though I loved the tone, I called it a Dragabout Scout.

it folds up quite small, and seems sturdy so far.
it doesn't have bungees like the higher dollar units, but you can get yer own cheap enough.

I understand that, and thought I'd throw out an alternative option that would work for more that one item.

While I've not used the Mesa unit, I've heard that it has been problematic for some users in terms of wheel life, and rattles.

Thanks! I've ended up with dollies and hand trucks over the years to deal with various size cabs. Some work better than others. Always interesting to see what cab manufacturers come up with themselves.
