Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Pt. Tres

Status
Not open for further replies.
My Mesa/Boogie arrived today, with no invoice or indication of what had been done. I gather that they replaced the master volume pot. The faceplate is the same, but now has a switch for active/passive as compared to the dual input jacks previously.

I can testify that she's her old self, sonically: I stopped at my playing partner's place about 4, and we jammed until 7. No issues. Gawd, what a great sounding amp!:hyper: I've not had another amp that made tiny changes in the P's bass control become major changes in personality. Whew. Glad she's back. Now the Fender won't be used....

I'm looking into buying a WA and seeing as im strapped for cash I'd like to buy used... How much would it be to get the amp upgraded to the latest circuitry? Given that it needed the Passive/Active switch and the effects bypass.

Call Mesa to find out. BTW it doesn't really "need" the upgrades. It'll sound the same either way. If it's noisy just clean the effects jacks using the "Chef maneuver" (spray a 1/4" plug with contact cleaner and ream 'em out real good). That'll probably cure it.

I'm thinking of buying a Mesa walkabout amp to replace my Markbass little Mark II. I use the amp with one or two Aguilar DB 2x10's (depending on the size of the room). The Markbass amp is 300 watts at 8ohms and 500 watts at 4 ohms. My question is do you think the Mesa amp will keep up with the Markbass amp?

I was really blown away by the sound of the Mesa walkabout comb with the 12' speaker.

You're joking, right?

My question would be, do you think the Markbass could in any way compare with the Mesa/Boogie? I've played mine at outdoor gigs without a problem.:D

What type of cabs are you using and what kind of music do you play?
I play mostly rock with a loud drummer. We do a lot of out door type gigs in the summer. I don't have any experience using a Mesa WA in a gig setting. All I can go by is what I have now. Have you used a Markbass amp? And no I'm not joking...:D

I have an MB F1, and the Walkabout head (and some other stuff)
I find I can use the F1 and WA interchangeably, in terms of volume.

Thats great to hear! I may also look at the Mesa/Boogie M-Pulse 600. Does this amp sound the same as the WA?

Did you see the post about the Markbass F1. It seems some people are having problems with the particular model. I myself have had my Little Mark for years with no problems at all.

The MPulse 600 does not sound like the Walkabout.
It's cleaner, has a little more top end extension, and less tubey.
BTDT; sold it.

No sir, don't know what you're talking about in therms of the F1.

Hi all. Picked up an older, used WA and gonna try my (not very handy at all) hand at the fan mod....but i cannot seem to find the posts explaining how this is done and exactly what fan works. Can anyone help me out in my hitherto fruitless search through 3 editions of this uber megathread?

Just a FYI correction on this... if anyone cares.
It's a Noctua NF-R8 - has 3 speed settings and is actually 31.2CFM at the 17db setting, 23CFM at 10db, 15.3CFM at 7db.

. . . has 3 speed settings . . . .

Interesting. How do you control the speeds? Is it switcheable on-the-fly or do you set it once and have to leave it. If switchable, how/where did you mount the switch?

Thanks! I can't say I'm really bothered by the fan noise - at a gig it's a complete non-issue and even at low-volume bedroom practice it's just white-noise that's drowned out even by the MP3 player I jam along with. But if I ever have to open her up for other reasons I might do the fan mod while I'm in there.
