Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 5!!!

I did a pretty big show last night with the Walkabout and an Epi UL410, and I had way more power than I needed, even with three guitar players and a piano.

Granted, the guitar players were playing smaller, 112 15-50 watt rigs, but, still they were plenty loud.

+1...While the Scout 12 is a mighty 12, in the end, it's only a 12. Try an efficient multi-driver cab before you give up on the WA.

Absolutely +1 to the 2 above. The Walkabout is an amazing amp, but it needs enough spkrs to work.

This may be a good time to explore the new G.B. uber quad 1288 cab w/ your WA hd. A tad bigger than the "little combo" but it sure has my attention.

Offering a 4 ohm option is probably out of the question, given 3 drivers & not just a single voice coil to consider.

I seriously thinking of trading my walkie 12 for something else....it just compresses too much for me...
I love the tone, but it just squashes quicker than I can handle.

Would a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0-12T get me the next best thing?

I gotta have tube action, but more preamp headroom.

I have Electro Harmonix pre tubes in right now...

This bums me out, I thought I have "the" little combo for life.

Know how you feel. But I LOVE my Walkabout for the gigs it covers well. So it will stay. I think that's just the lack of power/lack of headroom. The Mesa Scout 15 however seems so much bigger. But it gets kinda heavy physically to schlep, so it's never been of much appeal to me.

The other posters who commented about pairing the WA head with a bigger/multi-driver cab are right in many senses. I paired my WA with a Bergantino AE410 4 ohm cab and it was truly bigger sounding. Quite impressive. Yet it still squishes. But that's some of the sweet, natural appeal of the tubey goodness that WA amp delivers.

In the world of small, portable tube tone that punches more, yes the Shuttle 6.0 is louder, but it's cleaner and not anywhere near as organic as the Walkabout. I would venture to guess the GB streamliner would be the tube amp to go to.

I am seriously thinking about getting one of the new WA's as I have been missing the tube tone I used to get from my Ampeg B25B.
Oh has anyone tried changing the pre tubes to NOS ones?

I'd never use a lower gain tube.

Why do you feel you need to replace tubes?

I think GB simply had tube feel/give/roundness as their primary goal, but the complex, tweakable mids of the Walkabout still set it (far) apart IMO. I'll keep my SL900, but if a WA 900 (or even 500) becomes reality, I'll prolly flip the GB.
