Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 6

Do any of you regular WA users also have experience with the 400+? can you compare tone and overall volume capability?

What other amps on the market are in the same tone range as the WA but with more power? My large amp is a gk 1001rb-ii which is great, but the more i use the WA, the less i like the gk tone. I think i need a different "big" amp backup.

Nothing is exactly like the WA, but if in the ballpark is close enough, there's Mesa's Titan, and GB Streamliner.

Streamliner=Walkabout-not.
Big diff in their presentation of lows, mids, and highs.
Streamliner has heftier native lows, that I had a hard time taming/Walkabout can add beef, easy.
Streamliner seemed scooped and had a hard time mix cutting, for me/Walkabout=big rich creamy mids
Stremaliner had a lot more top end capability/Walkabout doesn't have lots of top end sheen.

So the Titan and the BB750 are closer to the WA, than the M-Pulse 600
Am I getting this right? Even though it's called the M-Pulse Walkabout...

Why cant they just make a bigger WA!? Im sure the magic in the tone comes from a combination of the pre voice, gain structure, and the output drive. If they could mock the pre, double the output devices, and mimic the voltage and current specs of the drive stage... Well i would be buying another mesa amp. :D

Mesa probably wont though since the WA sells anyway and a bigger version would directly impact that. Ill just go ahead andd answer my own question... :rolleyes::)

I think there's supposedly one in the works, though probably not until some time in the distant future. Trust me, everyone in here has wondered and wished for the same thing... you're in good company!

Seriously?! Is that pure rumor or is here something to it?

Its like we all find "our" amp in the WA but more juice is needed sometimes.

I think it's somewhere between pure rumor, and rampant speculation.

Mesa know we want one. They know they should build one.
They have other priorities, that maybe we'll know more about after namm, but, maybe not.
I haven't heard anything....

Yeah, I was just poorly paraphrasing stuff that Tom has mentioned earlier in this megathread: that Mesa are aware that people always ask about a higher powered Walkabout and that supposedly there's some stuff being developed way down the pipeline.

I wouldn't take it to mean that this thing will actually materialize, but I also don't want to believe that I couldn't pleasantly be surprised one of these days when Mesa shows up at NAMM with a special announcement. Never give up hope!

That is right, especially the clean channels of the 750 and Titan, when driven with higher gain. The 600 does not sound like a Walkabout.

Because the pre and master interact significantly, a larger WA might not be the cure-all if what you want is the tone of the current WA with pre and master both at noon.

A lot of my current WA gigs I can carry either with the WA combo or w/ the head driving bigger cabs. A 1K WA head run at just past idle wouldn't necessarily be a better solution for those jobs.

More fun news in the never-ending saga of "The Walkabout that Tasted Beer". Spoke to Mesa today, as I was getting a little antsy to get this thing back. Turns out my beer was able to find everything vital inside my amp and basically destroy it. Completely fried all 6 MOSFETs, a couple IC's, and some other little stuff. Basically it just wiped out the power board. The Mesa dudes got some special cleaner and were able to scrub down the preamp board, and replaced all the MOSFETs, but when they tried to fire it up again some residual beer crud fried two of the brand new MOSFETs. So now I'm waiting for the shop to receive two more MOSFETs (luckily I'm not getting charged for these last two) and hopefully it'll be all right when they come in next week.

Damage tally thus far:
6 MOSFETs x $29 = $174
Assorted IC's = $10
Labor = $50
TOTAL $234. SO FAR.

Maybe this is God telling me to quit drinking.

Well if beer does that to your amp what does it do to your gut?

Can you test the effect of a nice glass of red in the amp when you get it back, maybe that is healthier :P

Seriously, sorry that you are having this hassle and expense. I feel your pain.
