Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 6

I liked the Scouts, Back When.
Gigged 'em, long time.
They feel too pillowy and indistinct to me, in Nowsville.

That's a personal deal though.

They're A Good Thing.
Someday, I'll try a 15, with the player network.

Hey chef if I wanted to get another radiator cab for my scout shoulda get a 8ohm or 4?

I mean that would push the head at 2 with two 4 ohm cabs right?

I might just go that route Honestly

That's a personal decision.
The manual states 4 ohm optimal, 2 ohms to be avoided, or some such unclear thing.

I've run all of mine at 2 ohms, hard, and never had issues; though some folks have.
You can run one at 4 and one at 8 for 2.67; when I did this, I ran an 8 ohm 15. The 8 ohm driver sees a bit less power, so I figured the bigger cone area made up for that.

If I were to replace my two Scout 12 cabs with one Mesa Powerhouse 2x12 Cab...what would I expect tone wise?

not quite as fast on the draw as Chef, but I have used Powerhouse 2x12 with my WA (also a PH 1x15). You will definitely get heard with that combination, but the tone goals are very different. Powerhouse is much more mid-driven, aggressive, present style of cab, the Radiators and Scouts are much warmer down low, with a much sweeter mid note than the Powerhouse. IME, this is true of the PH 1x15 and PH 4x10 cabs too. I think it represents the Mesa tone goals for the PH cabs in general.

Thanks very much to the help, guys!

I have the 4 ohm extension cab and have ran it hard without any issues. As a precautionary tactic I replaced my solid wood back cover on the combo with some metal u channel allowing any excess heat to easily escape out the top and away from the fan intake.

Don't the new Scout combos come with a vented back cover? If so I wonder if Mesa would sell just the vented covers to upgrade the older Scouts?

Although I'm sure the new vented backs work perfectly fine for running the WA at 2 ohms, they still don't address one issue where much of the heat off the heatsink is expelled out the side of the amp and redirected down to exhaust right beside the fan intake. Is this a real issue? Not really, as there aren't many failures even when ran at 2 ohms with the old style full wood covers.

I can tell you from my experience with the cover removed altogether most of the heat feels like it's being expelled out the top right corner when viewing the combo from the back. This portion is covered up with the back cover on forcing all that heat down to the bottom of the combo where the fan can suck it back in.

Here's a crude paintbrush drawing I drew to show the cooling air flow. The fan is below the heatsink.

As with all solid state devices, the less heat they are exposed to the more reliable and longer life will be gained.

Awhile back somebody mentioned that Mesa is selling the newer vented covers outright. Something like $70 comes to mind.

Yeah-they'll sell you the newly vented top cover, but if you have an older combo you will also need a newly vented wooden cover/back panel for that too. I'm sure they sell both, but it'd likely be around 200 for both elements.

Nice Rod! Did you place the Scout on top of the AE112?

Yep. Was at an engagement party, about 150ppl & hall wasn't big, but as the crowd was packed in, needed a good amount of volume.
Drums were not mic'd & the WA on top of the AE112 worked beautifully.
I really like this set up. The AE112 seems to compliment the Scout cab nicely. WA's eq is great for any 'blooms' & am running the upright thru a Fishman plat + eq pre before the amp.

Well tonight after work I'm heading across the creek to pick up my Mesa stuff I had shipped to my daughter's place in Michigan. As I posted before on pg 39 #771 I'm looking fwd to trying out the WA w/extension cab. If I can figure out how to post some pics when I get it home I'll do so. The pick in my avatar is of the head/w case that was in the deal also. I have to say that Scott, who I bought the rig from was excellent to deal with. Just hope the custom guys are in a generous mood when I come back across with the gear. :)
