A little help, please: is the pre-amp tube the one on the left and the MOSFET driver tube the one on the right or vice-versa?

Thanks, guys. Tom, I just got the pair of tubes you recommended in your blog (Telefunken smooth plate and JAN Philips) from Doug's tubes, and I wanted to make sure I put them in the right spots. When I opened it up I found that the previous owner had replaced the driver tube with a JJ (the preamp tube was still stock), so I have one of those to play with, too.

Cool! Let us know how that works out for you.

I am perfectly happy with my WA tone, but it's winter time and I have too much time on my hands. Just curious about this tube rolling thing. For those of you who have done this with good results, I see that the Telefunken smooth plates, Mullards and JAN Phillips seem to be highly favored. Are you all buying the NOS versions for ~$85 (or more) a pop, or are the new production versions being used ?

Yes, I purchased the NOS versions (I had a little extra money to burn and decided to splurge). In fact, the Telefunken tube I got came from a famous Ampeg guy's collection (Doug was like, "If you're a bass guy, you must know who So-and-So is." "Oh, yeah, sure I do!" I lied ;)) Both tubes ran me $137 and change including shipping.

No need to do either.
The Tele's can be bought as Dynaco branded tubes and the Mullard's branded as Eico at a MUCH lower cost. Dynaco's listed on eBay sr under $40 w/ buy it now. There are other crossovers as well.
These tubes are very robust; I would suspect that there are 60's high end tubes around, still in use, that will outlive many of us.
Also consider Amperex brand.
