Mesa M6 Carbine Mega-Thread Pt Deux

I think some of my low end control problems are "room related."
Boomy room, shallow stage, forced to put the speaker up against the wall...typically, it's better to be some 3-4 feet away from the wall when you can.
IME, anyway...

I'm looking into the footswitch for the M6 to switch between the 1-5 settings. Is it this one?

Anything out there as an alternative for less than $59 american dollars?

Man guys after such a long wait, I can say it was worth it. The hiss I mentioned in previous posts is definetely a non-issue for my church gig. Maybe in a small silent room it might be an issue, but now that I have gigged with it a church, definetely not a deal for me. I ran mine with gain at 11, bass 11, treble 11, setting 3, and volume like at 1.5 or 2 max. I used my bergantino HS210x2 stacked vertical with the tweeter levels at about 10ish setting on a riser and didn't have any problems with low end except when I was too loud. Once I got the stage volume balanced it sounded great to me and it ran completely cool. Oh, and I played over the bridge on a Lakland DJ5 with a Jretro with everything flat except the bass at about 25% (it is all boost). M6:bassist:

Uh oh... hope your bank account is healthy and strong, because it's about to take a full shot to the jaw. :D

You know, as cool as it would be to have the M9 I really couldn't justify it in the slightest. My Fathom does everything I want it to and more already and since I don't like compressors the graphic is redundant for me. Of course I wouldn't complain about the extra 300 watts, but good lord - I can only imagine the sonic destruction that can be dished out with 50% more power... the one I have already never goes above 8 o'clock.

Ahh, I didn't realize/remember you already had an M6. I must agree. While I'm sure the M9 is incredible, I really have no GAS for it at all. I just don't need the extra stuff it's got... including the power.

Have you tried an Auralex GRAMMA pad under the cab? It might help. Sometimes I find that using a GRAMMA pad helps, but sometimes it doesn't. This, too, seems to be room-specific.

Tom.

negative...not sure that could help with the "cab to wall coupling."

It won't help with that, of course. But it may help with cab to floor coupling.

In those places where you have to be up against the wall, can you side wash, and let the bass carry to the audience through the mains?

The dance/party band I play in has two dual-18 subs. Yeah, we THUMP, but you gotta' have that. :)

One of the sound guys were used to gig with a lot had a nice EV system, and he had a bunch of the 4x18 EV subs. He'd cram four of them (two per side; plus mid/high cabs to match) into some clubs that we probably could have gotten by with just a pair of JBL Eons.

Fortunately, I was generally standing on the quieter side of those stacks. :smug: :bassist:

"4x18 subs, etc..."

Last rig I played thru like that was massively outdoors. I was waaay behind them.
I did hear some of the other bands thru them tho...awesome.

So the custom footswitch I ordered shipped out yesterday. I ordered a little less than a month ago, and now I am wondering why I did. It will be nice to have, but in reality, my gigs don't call for it.

Its a 3 button switch, we'll see how I like it, but I might end up putting up for one of you guys who would have more use for it.

Smallequestrian - I must have missed your post about the custom 3 button switch. I went back a few pages and didn't see it. Can you point me to your last post on it or just tell me the 3 buttons are/do?

Also, in the studio again last night with just guitar/vox/keys and woodshedding some songs. I'm trying to convert from flat-pick to finger syle and I've needed to refine my techniqe a bit. One of the things I've practiced with was running the volume and trebble higher than I normally would, forcing me to be more aware of my dynamics. I combined that with some more random thoughts I've had floating around based on the discussions here - bass boost or no, selector settings, etc. I pushed the bass boost back in and turned the bass knob up, running settings 3 & 4. I found I was able to get the volume up pretty high with just my 212 and still not have it "sound" loud despite the fact that it "felt" loud (particularly in setting 2). I was way down the the low frequecies and the other band members didn't seem to notice just how loud I was until I found the resonant frequency of the room was "B" when I hit it for a long sustain, at which time the walls started to move as did people's clothing. My keyboardist said she could feel her pants shaking; I almost asked her if she wanted me to go back and hold the note a bit longer, but that would have been in poor taste :D

I did manage to jump up into the 4 setting for a bit so it was easier to "hear" the notes I was playing. I'm finding that it is almost impossible to coax a bad sound out of this amp. It just delivers the goods all across the board. The tonal changes you get from the gain settings and the postion of the bass knob (since that seems to change the overall tonal character, and not just the bass level) do add some complexity to finding "the" sound, but I'm not so worried since there are so many good sounds.
