Mesa M9 mega thread

I'll hafta take a look, but as long as I've had this amp I've left it 12/10/12 for B/M/T and the Compressor on, both Th/and Ratio at about 10:00, and I think the settings were about-
-2 cut @ 33
even @ 80
+2 bump @ 150
even @ 300
+1 bump @ 600
+1 bump @ 900
even @ 2k
-1 cut @ 5k
-2 cut @ 8k

It's not perfect, but it's getting there. The @900 and 2k give me the attack I need while playing pickstyle yet not overbearing like I had before, which was basically a "reverse smiley face" peaking at 900 to really dial in that grind, but we just did some recording and while it "cuts" like I want, the fundamental isn't there and for hard rock my guitards really have an even tone so they don't dip into uber-low freq's so I can add in the beef and not really clash. Plus on two of our new songs I'm back to doing fingerstyle so that previous EQ setting wasn't really playing nice with fingers.

I never use a pick, so, that's one thing...what voice are you using?

Small changes: good...they really do make a diff.

You're comp settings are higher than mine, but I'd bet that's pick related.

Voice is "flat", at 3. I think the manual has it right in that if you try and use the Voice and EQ together, it can get kinda funky and those are the results I was getting.
I do like Voice 2 for slower, fingerstyle stuff. Now we have all of our amps and stuff in one big rack so I don't switch it any during a show, but previously I'd switch off the G-EQ and swap the Voicing for a few tunes then back to normal but this is fine right now.
And yeah the comp settings are b/c 1. I use a pick 90% of the time, 2. we downtune, and 3. I use my low B (tuned to A) a lot so this just helps keep things a little tighter. I kinda wish the M9 had more footswitchable features like the M-P600 and Titan V12. Mute, G-EQ, Compression, FX-Loop would be easy enough, I'd think. I could live w/out Voice but that would have been even more killer.

I gigged an M6 Carbine last night and compared to my LMII. Both were really very good in different ways. But the one thing the Mesa Carbine amp does exceptionally well is support the low note fundamental with more poise. Yet I found myself wanting just a bit more midrange complexity from the M6, which I was getting from the LMII.

The point? I think maybe the M9 Graphic EQ along with compressor might give me exactly what I want.

From having the M9 a while now, I can say I'd be "happy" with the Voicing options the M6 offers, but that G-EQ is at this point a must for me and it'd be tough going to the M6 which only offers the Voicing feature! :p The closest I can get to my tone not using the G-EQ is Voice 4, but then I gotta adjust the B/M/T tones a good bit more to make up for that.

I bounce back and forth between voice 3 with a bit of mid cut, and voice 2 with a bit of mid boost.
GEQ I use to tweak from this cab to that, this bass to that, or crummy room issues.
Comp I have set, more or less at 9 and 9.

Being on the gig, I didn't have a lot of time to tweak. Didn't want to annoy my band mates and make them wait for me even though it was a slower gig than usual. Your point about cutting mids in Voice3 makes sense. I didn't try that. Mostly I just switched between Voice 2 (? the mid scoop voice) and Voice 3 (The voice in the middle - straight up)

BMT were at noon. Master at 8 o'clock, Input gain around Noon. (quiet gig)

On voice 2 (yes, that's a bit of mid scoop, and adds a bit of bright) I tend to cut a little bass, either by the bass control, or the GEQ, or a little of both. It's a big voicing.

I'm gigging the M6 amp at the same place tonight. But tonight is 'ladies night' which is usually a packed house crowd along with a local radio station live broadcast. So tonight will be the acid test. I wanted to get familiar last night with the amp so I can set-it and forget it tonight. Thanks Chef!

fwiw, I really like the compressor on the M9 for tightening up and controlling that hefty low end. It's almost always on, set to "balance the E and B strings" to the rest of the bass, as the low end response can just be, well, BIG.

when I ran mine in a 2-space rack, yeah noticeably more heat when running lower impedance load

but I now use a 4-space with just the M9, and the difference in temperature is minimal

mine does not have the mod
but never ran into protect mode, heat related or otherwise

sorry but do you mean that in the 4 space rack it doesnt get hot or that there is not much difference in the heat with the 4 or 2 space rack.Reason is Im thinking of going to a 2 space rack from a 3 space rack bag.

I'm in a small skb 2 space rack.
i've never had heat issues.

if you have an early M9, with no venting and no second fan, i'd expect that to be different.
mesa will upgrade the early units.

I did the same thing but have kinda settled on 2 with some lower mid boost.My comp is also around 9+9.I think this is one of the nicest built in compressors Ive heard.

Yeah mine is a newer unit and had all the upgrades.I sent it in when I got it and they were nice enough to go over it and said it was current.They did replace a resistor(so they said) so I was told I should never have heat issues.

Which SKB 2-spacer do you have.The one I was looking at does not have recessed handles,has the strap handles.I wondered if the handles were heavy duty enough for the weight.Its listed as an effects rack I believe.
