Metal bass, I really don't understand the fun.

The thing with metal heads is that they are unashamed know-it-alls and generally take one or two steps too far. I didn't think Metallica had the best bass mastering in the world. He listened to ONE track and took some undue pot shots that may have violated some posted TB rules. So, feel free to say that my music sucks if you disagree with my opinions. I dare ya.

FWIW, for people claiming to be the most open minded musicians on the planet, that wasn't very open minded, eh? Anyone who doesn't "understand" metal is somehow inferior or a troll. Does this sound about right?

Somehow every metal musician playing dropped C (or lower) chug chug riffs thinks they're the most sophisticated band on the planet.

Why all the generalizations? One guy criticized your band and suddenly ALL musicians with a similar musical interest are supposedly claiming to be the MOST open-minded people on the planet and are therefore, ALL a bunch of hypocrites who ALL play chug-chug in drop C.... you see where I am going here? The problem is all in your head. Why don't you lighten up?

Imagine this scenario:
There's a vanilla ice cream on the table, your friend asks you to try it and tell him what you think. If you like it he can get you more. You try it and decide you don't like it. What do you say?

1. Gah! This is the most terrible ice cream ever, how do people like this? This sucks!!!
2. Not my cup of ice cream.

Hell Yeah!! let me downtune my Low B to Low F# and chug along, only hitting the exact same chords and notes as the guitar. Guitar plays a RIFF, I'll just sit that out, why should I play anything other than 4 notes per song?

Modern metal bass sucks for 90% of what I have heard. Yes there are exceptions, but they are rare- Mudvayne was great bass playing bass on the first album only, Dream Theater of Course, and that BA guy in Periphery who did the cool headcam video, that was some good stuff.

DOn't beleive me? go check out the "great" bass playing on "As I Lay Dying " now on Jammit.

Guys, just because you think you should play bass leads doesn't make it so. This is like saying country bass sucks because you don't play diminished chords via slapping/popping. It doesn't fit the genre.

Bass mostly supports guitar in metal. Get over it. You can play leads and you can play something that guitar doesn't, but if it's in band's favor to chug along with guitar, then do it. If you're playing in a metal band the only thing keeping you from being creative is your lack of creativity. Sounds redundant, but truth hurts. I do a lot of slapping/popping in my band and I rarely play the exact line the guitars do, we harmonize things a bit more complex, so if you're stuck in a band that FORCES you to chug along, and you don't want to do that, why are you playing metal anyway, and more specifically, why in that band?

All this being said, I really hate buried bass on modern recordings. Producers should know better, listen to any Gojira release to hear how metal bass can sound!

Metal is as fun/bad as the others genres ! There is a lot of very boring band in all genre saddly. Few people are really creative and most of them rely on tried and true formula.

for me most band are boring to listen to, I like a nicely harmonized music when you can do whatever bass line ( or any instrument line ) and it doesn,t change anything ... to me it isn't interesting. Or in most music you can only play root-five all night and it wouldn't change anything. Many people doesn't want to be told what to do and think they are creative but they rely on cliché and the music is the same old re-heated thing. I heard more interesting stuff from classical composer, video games composer and extrem metal than in any other genre. when you aren't the person who composed the music you have more chances to have something you wouldn't normally do.

and please don,t talk about rythm section ... to me it is the ultimate insult as a musician.

there is some metal with a lot of technic and fretless and you have a bass solo ... it can be done but too many player ( see not musician ) will only do the same old formula ...

I hear ya. Metal just doesn't have any grooves. While i am always supportive of someone who enjoys music (metal included), I find it hard to believe that they are finding as much enjoyment out of their musical experience as I have found in mine.

So i am glad you have realized how incredibly fun listening to/playing funk and jazz can be. It's just a better world of musical appreciation.

"I hear ya. Chinese food just doesn't have any flavor. While I am always supportive of someone who enjoys food (Chinese included), I find it hard to believe that they are finding as much enjoyment out of their lunch as I have found in mine.

So I am glad that you have realized how incredibly flavorful tacos can be. It's just a better world of flavor appreciation."

OK, Mr. Jam Funk dude.

It's funny, i have similar feelings about my lunch as well. I really do love Mexican food. Touche on the creative reply

Here's an easy way to solve the problem. Next time your band is practicing, and there is a song with a two part guitar harmony, play one of the parts as well. They will either hear how awesome it sounds and STFU about you soloing, or they are going to tell you to STFU.

Have you ever thought about the possibility that they don't think you're good enough to solo like a true shredder?

Yeah, it's funny how people on here talk about "serving the song", but when it comes to certain genres it's suddenly the wrong thing to do.
