It is amazing what sticks and what slides off of my memory these days.
Being a security geek I remember this one, as unlike the usual credential and PII thefts of most breaches, supposedly some guys in the drier, sandier, and more religiously rigid climates were afraid of being killed for having advertised on there.

Just throwing this out there as someone who listens to metal, among other forms of music.
I don't meet many women interested in metal. That's ok. That's not the only deciding factor for me in a partner.
That said, there are times when a person is looking for something specific. Now, the internet can connect those people. Regardless of meeting people at a show or whatever, this is an alternative. That's it. I think that this whole echo chamber superiority idea you're getting at isn't the story for the people on these sites.
It's not for you, that's fine. It's not meant for you. I don't see anyone getting hurt. Except for people potentially losing money. It's ok to leave it be.

Music is still special, possibly more so when you see how many people these days spend so much time listening with headphones. People still listen to music for a decent part of every day. The unfortunate bit is that it is not valued any more and most people under 30 have never paid to own any music in their life.

The only delusions I see happening in this thread are:

1) Metal music isn't popular
2) Chicks aren't into metal
3) This whole Internet business is just a passing fad

Sorry, grandpas, but there are apparently 60 million people paying $800 million a year to just the casual dating sites owned by the Match group alone (Tinder, OK Cupid, Match.com) Source: The company behind Tinder and OkCupid says it's worth $3.1 billion This isn't counting the more "serious" dating websites like eharmony and the less serious dating websites like the ones mentioned here. As out of touch as it may make you feel, the way this generation dates is on the Internet.

And as far as 1) and 2) goes (albeit terrible) metal bands like Asking Alexandria, Bring Me The Horizon, Attack Attack! etc. are regularly playing massive stadiums filled primarily with chicks. And, yeah, those chicks don't like being creeped on at concerts any more than they did back in your day (barring that orgy you jumped in on at Woodstock) so I wouldn't doubt some of them are signing up on terrible websites like meetmetaldate.whatever

I'd argue there have been some changes with my generation. We still like music, but very few people I know really immerse themselves in it. Now it's mostly "turn on Pandora and hope for the best" rather than buying an album and really listening to it.

Of course, modern pop is also written mostly by the same group of corporate hacks now so it's not like we have a Michael Jackson or a Prince to inspire anyone

Excuse me - MODERN pop???

Pop music has always been written, in a large part, but corporate hacks, be it Elvis, the Jackson 5 (or 90% of all Motown), the Monkees, and on and on. That's how Carole King and a bunch of others made a good deal of their money.

!@#$@% - Prince wrote songs for a bunch of people.
