Metallica auditions from "Monster"

i personally am a big metallica fan. i think rob was a good choice. he came in and the first song he wanted to play was "battery" that's a really fast song. he's awesome. my brother went to a metallica concert and said rob got up there and did a cliff burton solo and i think a jason newstead one too. i think he' s awesome

Not only did he want to play Battery.. he nailed it. Just totally locked in with them, right off the bat, and with a smile on his face the whole time. I love watching that scene.

As for his right hand technique, I seem to remember reading in an interview that he uses two fingers but was also using the backs of his fingers ( like an in-out motion) to catch notes too.

As for "Battery", I've always struggle with that one fingerstyle, but find "Disposable Heroes" OK. Trust me to be awkward!

i still think jason was an excellent replacement for cliff. still think claypool might have made the mix a bit interesting....

i havnt really heard anything since load/reload.. ive seen teh vh1 idol show with metallica, they can still play which is good, but somehting abotu rob i just didint like....he stood out liek a sore thumb, but dont knwo why. Ive gotta see its a monster, i heard it was awesome

ROB is a ****in champ! He's the one who inspired me to wanna play bass... went and saw monster in theatres and came out of there just wishing I could play like him.

Gotta love kirk in this movie too, he just makes me laugh everytime I see him, +1 the traffic school, forehead slapping incidents too

all i have to say is that i saw robert t. play with metallica in november 2004. his slapping solo was awesome.

I observed R Trujillo's playing style fairly closely and I think he actually alternates between using Two Fingers to using Three for the really fast stuff like Disposable Heroes. I do that sometimes, and though the 3rd Finger can feel more difficult to keep up, once you get used to using it then that can be handy far playing a lot of those fast runs.

A British Magazine called Classic Rock issed a free DVD a Month back, and on it is a Live Video from Zakk Wylde's Band Black Label Society, which Rob also played in (Mike Inez also played with them for a while, I saw him with Heart last Summer) and throughout part of the song, believe it or not, Rob actually uses a PICK.
Having said that he looked uncomfortable using a Pick and kept standing still on the same spot whilst kneeling forward, resting the Bass on his leg with a look of intense concentration on his face. Its only when he goes back to using his Fingers that he Transforms back to his old self again. I guess he used a Pick to keep that particular Bass sound of the song.

Has anyone else seen that?

Yeah, the BLS DVD is a favorite of mine. Rob was actually asked by Zakk to "just play a regular P bass" because Zakk feels like that best captures the sound he's looking for. Zakk prefers his bass players to use their fingers but he's said that a pick is sometimes required to give the tone some songs need...the cutting edge sound.

I'm pretty sure the tune you're referring to where Rob squats down with a pick and has that determined look on his face while he's playing during the verses is "Bleed For Me".

I love watching/hearing Rob play...seen him at countless Ozzfest's with Ozzy and BLS and saw him a few months back with Metallica. He did a solo with MET and it killed!! I had to pick my jaw up off of the ground. He did some early Infectious Grooves slap stuff (Infectious Grooves cover of Immigrant Song) where he switched his hands up and used his fretting hand to slap the strings as his right hand actually made chords on the board..it was amazing.

If anyone thinks he's not up to par check out the early Suicidal Tendencies work or watch him play/slap with the bass at his feet...unbelieveable how well this man can play the instrument.

Rob's an endorsee of EMG pickups. All the times I've seen him using a P bass it's been with BLS and he either removes or tapes over the volume pot.

Jason only played with Ozzy for the Ozzfest tour...most recent rumor I heard as to his throwing in the towel is that he and Zakk really didn't hit it off. Again this is just a rumor...could be that Ozzy is pretty much just doing the Black Sabbath thing nowadays (which I prefer). Ozzy had tapped Rob Zombie bassist "Blasko" to replace Jason but that never saw fruition...again due to Sabbath taking precedence.

comparing the state of MM ex-members to the man himself, it's beginning to look more and more like he is out of work, not them.

so i just finished watching monster on tv, id never pay to rent it. i thought the auditions part was cool.

danny lohners wal looked AWSOME. glad they had it on there. i didnt think jeordie did that bad of a job. i really like scott reeder, but as with jeordie i dont think they wouldve fit the metallica "persona". the other guys they auditioned were cool...meh. i still think bill gould wouldve kicked all their assess.

however, i really thought that comment about jason and his "icon" status was low, real low. IMO jason made a great choice and i think was a very big person to leave that band.

im not a metallica fan never have been never will be. however, ive always had a great respect for them. and i think the movie solidfies that.

i think had they gotten lars, james and dave mustaine together though, that wouldve been a better scene. poor ol dave....


one last unrelated thought, funny how both danny and jeordie auditioned for the spot. danny is no longer in a band, jeordie is in NIN and rob is metallica and jason has whatever project is currently up. i hope jeordie and danny are still friends.

I thought that everything negative said about Jason in that movie was pretty low. Especially the Icon conversation. I also thought it was a bit ridiculous to have Rob up there. Rob is certainly an icon on his own IMO, but they really ought to have called up Jason and had him out for it, or just gone out as the three of them. He hadn't had anything to do with the Metallica 'legend' at that point.

I just watched it, and I thought it was quite interesting. The tryouts were a lot shorter than I was expecting, but in the end, I think they got the right player for the band.

Agree with this.... I do like Metallica but his ability IMO is not exercised. He may as well play with AC/DC and wear out two frets.
Also, I think it was on the Infectious Grooves web site I read a story by Rob T about how he was bagged for his poor bass playing. Well I bet that dudes choking on his own words.

I see Rob T as someone who sounds like no one else. He has that unique sound of his own purely by his huge chops and musical creativity. He is very inspiring.

It's like hearing a George Benson or Luther Vandross song and saying THAT is Marcus Miller for sure.

I'm actually of the opinion that Rob is too good to be in metallica. He's an incredible player with a pretty unique style, not something Metallica really has room for anymore.

But hey, its his gig and he's gotta be making more money than I ever will playing bass
