Michael Cera's Bass

And yes, I am a Michael Cera fan, I like all the movies he's been in and I loved Arrested Development while it was on the air. Plus he seems like a funny guy, and I think it's cool that he's picked up the bass and is playing in a band made up of members of other bands that I also really like!

I don't even like Michael Cera. At least since Arrested Development and even then it was part of an ensemble cast. I just think its a bit immature to blast some young guy because he's a famous actor playing bass.

Don't begrudge others their success. Unless they own a Mac book.:p

My 10 year old niece can play a few songs on bass too, but it doesn't mean she's a musician. you guys should start a Michael Cera club.

So let's all assume from a picture and because he's a big actor he CAN'T play? Just because he's an actor automatically proves he's a bad bass player? I love how people hate on someone just because they are famous.

And even if he isn't very good, who the hell cares. Good for him on doing something he obviously likes.

I personally think it's cool when I hear that actors and athletes also have interests in music. And again, even if they aren't good to the standards people on here and in this thread seem to have.

It should be noted that there is some precedent for celebrity actors being less than noteworthy bassists. Keanu certainly qualified in my book. Also, Jeff Bridges released an album as a bassist/singer that was pretty bad if I remember correctly. Micheal Cera I couldn't tell you. He could be great for all I know. I do know that I think he and Jeff Bridges are very talented actors. Keanu... well, to each his own.:smug:

I do think a great way for a mediocre band to get attention would be to have a celebrity as a member (even if they aren't very good). After all, having Micheal Cera or Keanu Reeves as your bassist probably doesn't hurt ticket sales.

Who cares if he's good or not? I suck, but am fortunately not also an actor, so nobody's bashing me.

Anyway, some kid is going to see Michael Cera playing bass and now decide he wants to pick up bass instead of guitar or drums. Isn't that a good thing?

The more we can add to our ranks the sooner we can take over the world!!!

Looks like we are finally experiencing a lull this ultra-emotional war on whether Michael Cera is a good bass player or not. Sorry guys, I didn't mean to piss so many people off because they don't agree that he's no good or they feel like I'm jumping to conclusions about him so I'm sorry for that.

All I was doing was making a comparison of Cera's band choosing him of all people to play bass and Dogstar getting Keanu to play bass back in the 90's. Is it really about good music or just media exposure for a band that isn't all that good? I know what I think. Whether you agree or not makes no difference to me, but I say have fun listening to that noise if you like.

I don't mind that Cera is LEARNING bass, good for him. I do however think that Cera's abilities on bass is not why the band chose him. And before "Scott Pilgrim" he showed no interest in bass to the public. Maybe he did play before the movie was shot, I wouldn't know because I don't really give a s**t, but I haven't seen anything to say that he in fact did - like a picture, a recording, an article, etc... so that's why I assumed and still do that he has not been playing for very long. All I saw was a movie that came out this year in which he played a bassist and now, whaddya know, he's touring in a band - big surprise.

Can I blame Dogstar and Mister Heavenly for wanting to try to ride the coat tails of their bass players' acting careers to get more exposure for an otherwise (IMO) mediocre band? No. But do I think the music is worth listening to either? No.

When I said MC is a noob on bass (I still believe he is), I was pointing out that he's not an accomplished bass player and who would want to see an amateur touring the world? Apparently there are a lot of you who do which I wasn't expecting, but not me. I've already seen one actor/musakcian on tour and I know that if I see MC, it won't be while he's on stage. That's all. Again, sorry if my honest feelings about him set off such a flame war, but even though many made good arguments, I still think he, Keanu, and both their bands suck. Just my opinion, but you guys have to admit.. if I had said how good he was, no one would want any explainations or evidence why. It's only when I say they aren't good.

So apparently you only have to back up your opinion on this site if you don't like something. Lolz.

The only issues I have with your reasoning is that Mister Heavenly doesn't need Michael Cera to make it big. They're already a super group. I would be surprised if they picked up Cera to ride his coattails. Additionally, I guess when I go to see a band, I don't really think about whether or not their bass player is "amateur" or not. I'm not even really sure how to determine that.

A supergroup that I never heard of until they got Michael was my point. I know a few of the guys have been in big bands like Modest Mouse, but even that group isn't that big (but a lot better IMO). They are all indie guys no? I think all indie bands are suffering right now putting food on the table with the scraps they make playing live (since no one is selling albums) and that's where MC comes in. Like I said I can't blame them, but it doesn't make for good music IMO. "A band is only as strong as it's weakest link."

I don't think whether a band's bass player is amatuer or not - unless he's known for something totally different. Then I have to wonder what the fuss is all about. As far as I can tell, it's not about his bass playing, it's that a super popular actor kid is in a band now and that's hip.
