Michael Cera's Bass

I know people can have multiple talents, I just think MC and KR are not those people. Anyone who actually has an opinion of their own gets attacked on this forum. You're right guys... agree with eachother always, accuse someone of making stories up if you don't like their opinion, keep that status quo. Sheep I say. If you guys think either of them are good musicians then cool. I don't, but it royally pisses me off to be accused of making up a story because you disagree with my opinion. And who the hell is going to be able to confirm the Keanu is tone deaf? Go see him play and you can hear for yourself, that is if you're not tone deaf.
The problem is when you base your opinion on either bad facts or non-facts and then try to play the martyr when people call you on your bad facts. Notice no one is trying to argue that you're wrong about Keanu. All they're saying is look at the documentation of Cera's playing before you lump him in with Keanu.

Well I watched Keanu with my own eyes so that's as good as it gets for facts as far as I'm concerned. Nothing is quite like seeing him in person. For Cera, he played guitar on some of the soundtrack on Juno. That to me is about the same caliber musicianship as such hits like "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "I'm a Little Teacup". I'm not even saying there weren't some decent songs on that movie, but the level of playing is as low as it gets IMO. As far as I know he never played bass before Scott Pilgrim and I was talking about bass. I'm baseing my opinions on the music I've heard from these actors and I'm not impressed. What facts of mine were bad?

So if evidence is what we are talking here, I've given mine. Where is your guys' that he played bass before Scott Pilgrim?

Dude, chill.

Micheal Cera is a bassist. Just because he's not a bass god, or a composer with a degree does not make him any less legitimate of a musican.

It's no different than berating a random person for not being good at bass. Only thing is with Cera, is he's a well-known actor and has somewhat recently started.

It would lower hostilities if you would please stop.

So what you're saying is, Michael Cera played some simple folk tunes on guitar, so he must suck at bass...okay...

No, I'm saying MC played some really, really easy stuff on guitar and that's the extent of his musical background as far as any of us have pointed out. People were trying to use the point that he plays other instruments as a reason for him being good at bass and I just don't see it. And I'm saying that he's a noob on bass and is touring in a position that should be given to a more accomplished musician. You people need to stop drawing your own conclusions about me. You might as well say I grow wonderful apples now because I used to grow pears.

I think most of us (at least me) wonder why it even matters. Why should his position by filled by a more accomplished musician?

I don't understand the arguments here. He's playing bass in a touring band. By definition he's a bassist. I've been playing < 2 years, and I have my second ever gig coming up later this month. That makes me a bassist.

If he gets to tour with good musicians in a good band, who obviously are allowing him to be in the band, then good for him., that's awesome, I wish I could do it. Who cares what his musical background is. The fact of the matter is he's up on stage.

win post is win.

I love bashing wannabe musician actors who think they're "the sh*t" as much as the next guy but seriously, this is talkbass, an extended family of bass players. I think we're a notch above drummers and guitarists (lead guitarists) on the evolutionary scale and we're pretty good at supporting each other so if the man's playin a bass I think that's pretty cool. Give him some props for not grabbing a guitar or a pair of sticks.

I wasn't trying to state that he's an amazing or accomplished on bass, I was simply pointing out that you need to research your statements before you outright bash someone simply because you don't like the music he's playing or because you don't think the fact that he's been playing for 2 or 3 years makes him "Worthy".

And yes, I am a Michael Cera fan, I like all the movies he's been in and I loved Arrested Development while it was on the air. Plus he seems like a funny guy, and I think it's cool that he's picked up the bass and is playing in a band made up of members of other bands that I also really like!

being a good musician is not a prerequisite for
having a successful band (see: fieldy). plenty of rock groups start with guys-that-happen-to-know-each-other-that-also-happen-to-play-instruments-but-maybe-not-very-well. i highly doubt they were holding open auditions and michael cera just happened to show up and blow away the competition.
