[Minneapolis/MN Thread] Midwestern Comradarie

I should add that I just leave a cab there. If in your position I'd shop for a small combo like a Fender Rumble 60 or one of the old SWR Workingman's combos. If you're playing without an acoustic drumset player (or with a good acoustic drumset player) the combo should be enough.

My experiences with church gigs have been good. Good musicians, no volume wars, etc. A small combo is all that's needed. You definitely don't need bar volumes in the churches I've played in.

Thanks Tim and Kraigo. A bit more background. The 'band' was the choir, a Yamaha electronic drum kit with a SWR(?) amp, bass, and piano. I didn't look very close to the amp but it was about the same size as a Ampeg BA115. Seemed a little overkill for the 'venue'.

I do have a ~30 watt Bassman (wide panel tweed clone I built a few years ago) that might be enough. I could even update the tone stack for the room.

A 8 ohm cab might be all I need.

If it's a weekly gig you will get lazy really fast. I bought my Shuttle 6.0 because I got tired of dragging my 20+ lb. AMP BH-420 back and forth. If you're thinking of buying a small cab, consider those to small combos instead. They're close to the same price as a standalone cab and you can just leave them there. The SWR has a built in DI. I'm not sure about the Fender. Things are best when all you have to bring is your bass.

I play every other Sunday and I used my Shuttle 6.0/Gries 1x15 Neo cab for quite awhile. I left it there for general use. Recently the church bought a GK 210 Neo Combo - sounds great and it fills the bill, and I got to bring my amp home. :)

Both the 1 x 15 and the 2 x 10 combinations worked well for us. We seat 250 - 350 on Sunday for contemporary service.

I'm sure it varies a lot. I play to about the same number of people, but it's largely acoustic. Hand percussion (sometimes), acoustic guitar, baby grand, a nice wooden recorder, etc. We had a drumset, but he was comfortable with low volumes. Often an electronic drumset gets turned up to be almost as loud as an acoustic in my experience. In something like Timmy does where it's all in-ears I'm sure it's cool.

My 1x10 models as being displacement limited to 75 watts with an inefficient woofer (Eminence BP102). In this situation I have all the headroom I need.

I also play at church (room could hold maybe 150-200) and we use an SWR Workingman's 2004 and matching 115 cab. They used to be mine, but I donated them when I got a new rig. I intended to sell them, but the old Peavey they had was so terrible I couldn't stand it. The amp is putting out less than 200 watts (since it only sees an 8-ohm load) and we usually have the gain and volume set at about 9 o'clock. A smaller combo would be just fine as the PA has some sweet subs.

Can someone bring a 2 10" cab or recommend a smaller cab? I played at our church on Sunday and my wife suggested I get something smaller :hyper:.

I had the volume very low and most of the bass rolled off on both the bass and amp. I was told it sounded great but not what I'm used to.

Thanks!

Rick, I am contemplating letting go the two Yamaha BBT110's that I have ... they are 4 ohms each ... I had a pair when they first were out, and really regretted selling them, so I picked up a couple used ones as they popped up over the last couple years, and they have sat in my closet ever since ... I hope to make it to the GTG, but up in the air still .. you can search on here for info on them, they have quite a following ...

I've got a little Tech 21 Landmark 60 wedge 1x10 combo (the first version) that I've used for small gigs. It has Tech 21's Sansamp DI built in so going to the house is super easy and sounds great. And at about 30 pounds, it's a nice size too. They can be found quite cheap if you look around. I can bring this if there's any interest.

I love 1x10's for some odd reason. I'd love to see them all, but bring them at your discretion. I was looking at the BP102 yesterday and thinking it would be fun to pair one up with an Alpha 6A and use the Eminence crossover at 800 Hz. Eminence's suggested large 1x10 cab comes out to about 16" per side and has an F3 of 40 Hz, which is very impressive. The BP102 has about 92 Hz sensitivity and the Alpha 6A about 93.5, so they'd be well matched. I'm just not sure why I need more cabs.

My vote would be on this cab-bp102s are my all time favorite speaker. I have a 102 loaded 210 and it is my favorite cab. If I get another cab, it'll only only be a cab with more 102s lol

I'd love to have something with a 3015LF, but since I don't, my BP102 four ohm cab let's me know what a cab with balanced low end sounds like. It's a great speaker, but the low sensitivity might limit it's usage. And you definitely need a mid, IMO.

This stuff is all new to me so I'm trying to learn as much and quickly as possible. I really appreciate everyone's input.

A simple 1 10" cab seems right for the church. I know my way around a table saw so building a cab wouldn't be a challenge. Plus I could tweed/oxblood it.

However, I do have some crazy love for Yamaha gear so the BBT110 is appealing. I have a 100w guitar combo I leave at the rehearsal space (seems to work ok) and a 50w guitar combo my guitarist really likes (and has gig'd with it).

I need to figure out the output impedance of my bassman clone. I'm hoping it is 4 ohm but guessing it is 8. I will it on the bench tomorrow night and measure it.

The next GTG should be a lot of fun!

I just found out we have a gig - at Wilebski's - on that particular Sunday afternoon. They are hosting three or four blues bands and recording a live CD. I sincerely hope we are first or second on the menu so I can pack up and haul tail over to the hdracer shop and still catch a good part of the GTG.

Later - Scott

I'd love to see this one! I have used a sansamp forever and used to have a landmark 300 amp.
