[Minneapolis/MN Thread] Midwestern Comradarie

If you watch the speaker building forums, most will tell you that cost is not a good reason to build your own. You can often get better quality than a commercial cab and you get to choose your own trade-offs. My main 1x10 is pretty big and pretty inefficient (poor at turning watts into dB's). It's how it gets the extended low end. It's great for me, but not worth it to many.

I think those Yamaha cabs sound pretty cool. I don't have an amp capable of doing a two ohm load, so the pair aren't that appealing to me. An eight ohm cab is fine because there are few 1x10's out there that can really handle more than 150 watts before exceeding the excursion limits of the driver. It's not like you need to eek every watt you can out of the amp. With modern low cost, D-Class SMPS amps putting out 900 watts, four ohm cabs are becoming less compelling, IMO. OTOH, if one four ohm cab (like my 2x12) is as much cab as you'll ever need, why not?

This stuff is all new to me so I'm trying to learn as much and quickly as possible. I really appreciate everyone's input.

A simple 1 10" cab seems right for the church. I know my way around a table saw so building a cab wouldn't be a challenge. Plus I could tweed/oxblood it.

However, I do have some crazy love for Yamaha gear so the BBT110 is appealing. I have a 100w guitar combo I leave at the rehearsal space (seems to work ok) and a 50w guitar combo my guitarist really likes (and has gig'd with it).

I need to figure out the output impedance of my bassman clone. I'm hoping it is 4 ohm but guessing it is 8. I will it on the bench tomorrow night and measure it.

The next GTG should be a lot of fun!

I checked my homebrewed amp and I do have a 4 ohm output tap. One 32 pound Yamaha BBT110 might be the ticket.

Great sound...cheap price.

Cheap is relative. I paid $65 for my p-bass and $100 for my 100w Bassman combo. My DIY Bassman tube amp cost even less.:D

I have college to fund.

My Music Store in Golden Valley. I'm not claiming they are the best ever. They've always treated me well. Their significance is that they have the largest percentage of the store dedicated to bass of anywhere I know of in town. It's not really saying much.

As a percussionist, Groth Music, Bloomington. Best percussion in town, but a smattering of bass and guitars as well.

I think you have to ask to get them back when you drop it off. I've definitely gotten parts back from them before.

Yeah, that is the way most repair shops work. I do it in my bike shop. If you ask, I have them ready in a box, after 30 day (like it says in the fine print of the repair order) they are mine and I throw out the junk and keep the good stuff.

Minnesota law says a repair shop has to give the old parts back to the owner unless they were used in a exchange in a rebuilt part if the customer asks.
