Nice series for the Giants against the Nats, even with 3 main players DL'd - others stepped it up.
What is up with the Nats? Sooo much talent, and not doing so well...
Bumgarner was amazing. Complete game, 3-hitter, 14 strikeouts, a home run and a double. Pitching against a team that can hit.
Wow.
Was fun to see Bryce Harper this series. That cat can hit!

The Natinals lack onyons...that's all. As lacking in talent as the Braves are...and the Braves might have four of these 25 guys around 4 years from now... they trail the guys who...for the last 4 years, have won without beating anybody...squeeking through the year and stumbling into the playoffs, by only 6 1/2 games while the Natinals lead the division by...........OH Wait! They DON'T.

The thing I remember most about him was from the 1982 World Series. He got hit in the knee in the 7th inning of Game 3, then came back and won Game 7.

There we go! Mr. Met says : "Who's got two thumbs up and is making a run at the post season? This guy!"

Up 5 games and looking to add another tonight in DC. Screw Scott Boras and Matt Harvey after tonight. The Mets should pitch him until he cries uncle. Being up 5 games, I don't care if they bat around on Harvey twice in one inning tonight. See how he feels after a 160-180 pitch beating, and then tell him you are done as a Met, call your real estate agent after your boss, Scotty. I don't care if he wins 22 games next year, the Mets are doing as well as they are because they got rid of the drama queens. When things go south, everybody rallies. They dont' send their agent out to blab to the press and stir things up. If I was a GM I would not allow a Boras player on my team. I know that's nearly impossible today, but he is a pox on professional sports.

I was living in New York when the Mets won their last ring. Mike Scott was the only thing standing between them and the World Series, and they were down in the sixth game with the Astros. The entire city was convinced that Mike Scott would beat them in the seventh game, if it came to that. The sixth game went to something like fifteen innings before the Mets finally won and avoided facing Scott again. The whole city let out a huge roar. I was still at work, because my girlfriend, now wife, was visiting her family. I stayed at work, but mostly just listened to the game on the radio. The air was electric. The only place I have ever been that got even more electric was Seattle during the 1995 Mariners run to the playoffs. The city had even more energy for that than it did for the Seahawks' Superbowl victory.

Fortunately, the Red Sox have a great crop of young players and Kelly and Porcello have pitched well lately; even Sandoval seems to be finally comfortable and Castillo is starting to show why the Sox paid big bucks for him. Oddly enough, it turns out that Cherington's best moves were the ones he didn't make: I doubt that they were ever seriously close to trading Bogaerts, but I'm sure that Betts, Owens, and Swihart would have been available at the right price and Jackie Bradley Jr. could have been a throw in. Now if Hanley Ramirez can learn to play 1st and/or they trade him, the future looks bright.

I am happy for the fan bases that are seeing some success after a long time of struggling. There were a ton of Jays fans at Fenway last night. The Astros, Mets and Cubs are heading to the playoffs; the Royals and Pirates kept their playoff teams together and successful again this year.

I thought that too in 2004 and we are still here. I don't often cross league lines in the World Series but I have enough residual good will toward Theo Epstein and Jon Lester to make the Cubs my rooting interest this year. The Cubs will be the underdog this year, but they are building a team that will compete for more years to come, so it will happen eventually. Start building the bunker and stocking up on canned goods now!

wasn't that the series where reynolds beat the throw to first base and got called out anyway after hernandez yelled at the ump, brocklander? took a run off the board, game went extras....

I was living in NYC at that time too and many of my friends at work were Mets fans. I actually rooted for the Mets in that series. Watched Game 6 of the World Series with another Red Sox fan in his apartment in Manhattan - I'm over it now, but it took a good 20 years.

I still say Mookie would have beat Schiraldi to the bag, even if Buckner had fielded the ball cleanly. And, as a Mets fan, when Schiraldi came in, it was clear that the game was in the bag for the Mets. They got rid of him, and Boston picked him up. Bad move by the Red Socks. Mets fans could have told them. If you are a Mariners fan, the name Bobby Ayala had the same effect as Calvin Schiraldi if you are a Mets fan (or probably a Red Socks fan).

I don't remember all the ins and outs of that game, but I sure do remember the sound New York City made when the game ended. The whole place opened up and roared. It was amazing.

somewhere out there is a still image of reynolds with his foot on first before the ball reaches hernandez. i'm not sure who paid brocklander. just as egregious as the blown call that cost the tigers pitcher that last year.

I agree with you on both points. Schiraldi did have the deer-in-the-headlights look, especially after giving up the 3 straight hits. However, it was Bob Stanley who pitched to Mookie (and he wouldn't have beat him to the bag either); that would have left the game tied as Knight doesn't score if it doesn't go through Buckner's legs. But if a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his butt all over the place. Fortunately Mookie Betts is named after Mookie Blaylock not Wilson.

That said, the Sox don't make it to the series without Schiraldi - he had 9 saves and a 1.41 ERA.
