And now the Mariners have traded away their closer and a DH who couldn't hit the inside of a paper bag if he was in it. Those aren't bad moves, because they already have another couple guys who could easily be closers. Maybe more than a couple. Pitching isn't the problem. Hitting is, and they didn't get a hitter.

The Rockies played a series against the As last week and averaged 38K in attendance. Two of the worst teams in MLB and the attendance was near-record.

All I can say is that Coors Field is indeed a very nice place to be on a summer day.

The Mariners neither bought nor sold much this deadline. So now the push for the playoffs with the team they have. Munoz is just fine as a closer, so trading away Sewald doesn't hurt much. I don't understand why they didn't get more for him, though.

Now they are just going to torture their fans by doing the Perils of Pauline routine right up to the end. They may or may not make it to the post season, but they will be close all the way. Scoreboard watching time. And they are only six games back of the Rangers. It could happen, y'know.

It's official. The Mariners are just sadists, and fans are masochists. They are making a late season run. Again. So, I'm scoreboard watching and enjoying every moment of it until the inevitable. But until then, this is their year!

And it usually is. Until the last few seasons, I was already thinking about football at this time of year.

Hey, the Mets go from as "all in" as all in can be to full rebuild.

Now, as an Astros fan and permanent antagonist to the Yankees, I want to see the Mets do well just to spite the Yanks. However Steve Cohen seems to like these half season flip-flops more often than most teams can stand. Especially after big-dollar signings.

Not too much to say about the Cubs this year. They got off to a nice start, followed it up with a dreadful stretch that put them in the bottom of the division, and have since had a hot streak that has brought them...almost back to .500.

After this post, the Cubs got mediocre for a bit. But they've gone a scorching 16 of 21 since mid-July and flipped from almost-certain sellers to (modest) buyers. They're now 1.5 games behind the division-leading Brewers. Whether they make the playoffs or not, I'm really glad they're not dumping a resurgent Bellinger.

I'm also extremely happy the Angels are going for it. Seeing Ohtani go to one of the usual megabucks suspects (Yanks and Dodgers) for prospects would have been sickening. Granted, he could still wind up in either place after the season but at least the Angels are still in the running.
