I do like it. If he stays healthy, he will be a big part of the rotation. If the Mariners can generate two pins worth of offense this season, the rotation will keep them in contention.
Signings and trades haven't worked. They were uncharacteristically quiet this year. Maybe that video says why. They didn't see the value outside their farm that could match what they have coming.
Julio has been a slow starter in the past. He barely got started at all last season. If he has a reasonable start, this could be fun.
I think it could be another tough summer for Cards fans. The team seems a bit direction-less. They practically did nothing in the offseason. But of course every team (except Cubs and Dodgers) is 0-0 right now and it's the time of the year to try to be optimistic! The NL Central is a weak enough division that I would not be shocked if the Cards won it. They would need a few things break the right way for them, but it's not impossible.

As always, hope springs eternal before opening day and my Pirates are thrilled with the prospects of maybe winning 40% of their games this year. There is a recent deep dive in to operation of this franchise that has found that not only are they incapable of running a Major League Baseball club, they are losing money at it to boot!

Julio's bat wasn't entirely awake during spring training, but it was more awake than the usual spring. He's signed for a long time. The Mariners just signed Cal Raleigh for a decent number of years, too. They didn't spend money on free agents, so they are spending it in house, apparently. They could do worse.

The SFGiants did great during spring training. If a team does well in the spring they hope they can carry that momentum into the season, if they do poorly they will say, "Its only spring training."
Despite all that I like what I see. Posey and Bob Melvin are really emphasizing fundamental baseball and the Giants executed that well this spring. Base running, batting with runners in scoring positions, pitchers throwing strikes, etc. Last year the Giants may have left a record number of runners stranded on base, it was frustrating.
Matt Chapman was tearing it up at the plate this spring and new shortstop Willy Adames was slugging as well. Both kept up their usual gold glove standard of defense. Tyler Fitzgerald moved over to second to make room for Adames at S.S. Fitzgerald is also a great defender and the Giants are hoping that the move to second will help him concentrate more at the plate. Still have one of the best defenders behind the plate with young Patrick Bailey he is only going to bet better. I expect his batting to improve as well. Not sure what the Giants will get with Jung Hoo Lee at center but if he lives up to his potential is should be another signiificant boost to the lineup.
Hopeful about starting pitching as well. Expect Logan Webb to be excellent as usual, he is the perfect pitcher for the Giants ballpark, lots of ground balls.
Verlander is healthy for now, how much does he have left at age 42? Will he return to his Cy Young form? Maybe not, but he could still be a darn good pitcher.
Robbie Ray is another year away from Tommy John surgery and pitched really well in the spring. He also learned to throw a changeup from Tarik Skull and the pitch has been generating a lot of whiffs. Another candidate to return to Cy Young form?
Jordan Hicks started out strong as a starter last year but faded as summer kicked in. He worked on during the winter and added quite a few pounds of muscle weight and he learned a lot last season. Will it be enough to sustain him as a starter?
The Giants bought up young pitcher Hayden Birdsong as a reliever. He was in a battle with Landen Roupp to start. His era was .75 with no walks and 18 strikeouts during his four starts this spring. The rumor is that if Hicks can't handle a lot of innings that Birdsong will be coming in for the sixth and seventh innings.
That leaves Landen Roupp who beat out Birdsong for the starting position. He pitched well for the Giants last September and had a great spring.
Lots of great young arms in the minors so there are plenty of options if anyone goes on the IR or doesn't pitch well Also, expect Doval to return to his dominant form in the bullpen.
The N.L. West is a very tough devision. Not predicting that the Giants are going to lead the West. They are predicted to finish fourth but I don't believe that is their fate and expect they are going to surprise a lot of people. I also think they have a good shot at the WildCard.
We can talk again next October.

I'm nervous about Lee being able to get on base. We will see.
I expect Verlander to spend most of his time with the Giants on the IL. Same as last year but that much older now. Great presence in the bullpen but he might not be much of a presence on the mound.
Another build year in my mind and could be another year to convince free agents next season that the Giants are real. Also, the first season w the new boss there are bound to be issues.The N.L. I am not buying any SF Giants stocks just yet but I'd like to see them have a good season. There is potential there. They have some likeable guys on their team. I'd like to at least see the former Jays, Chapman and Ray, have a good year. Chapman is brilliant at 3B. At the plate, he can look like the MVP for stretches and then go so painfully cold for weeks at a time. Hopefully he has one big hot streak this summer.

We’ll see how things work out during the first half. I hope the contend. They certainly have the ability to pick up a couple of key pieces around the deadline heading into the stretch.
