One week to go. The Mariners have done squat during this offseason. The natives around here are restless about that. I'm not. Why? All of their hyperactive trade moves over the last few years have backfired. If Julio gets rolling, this could be an amazing season.

Mets to re-sign Alonso

Two years, $54 million, includes a $10 million signing bonus. $20 million for the first season, and then the second season is $24 million but Alonso has an opt-out. Apparently he had a separate three-year $71 million offer from the Mets and took the two-year deal instead. He just turned 30 and IMO he is not likely to improve in any meaningful way as a player this season. If there wasn't more money available this year then I doubt he'll do any better next winter if he opts out. Maybe should have just taken the third year and more dollars? I dunno.

Pete will never have a better opportunity to drive in runs than he will this year with Lindor and Soto (and possibly Vientos) hitting in front of him. It's possible all four of them could have 30 home run seasons.

If everything works out Pete has a career year, breaks Strawberry's team home run record, wins a World Series, opts out, and gets paid in Colorado or Anaheim while Vlad Jr signs with the Mets for 2026. If he has another pedestrian year, he opts in, is full time DH for 2026, and hopefully doesn't do his Ryan Howard impression.

His power numbers are still very respectable but they have been on a slow downward trend. And his K% has been on the rise since 2021. Who knows, maybe he has a career year and opts out and then signs a huge deal next winter. But I guess I’m not a huge believer. Not rooting against the guy or anything. Just a bit skeptical 🧐😄

If the Jays don’t find a way to extend Vladdy before the spring, it’s going to be a long summer and off-season for Jays fans 😰

He's betting on himself. He has a great lineup in front of him. If his numbers go up, Cohen will give him a better deal.

Cohen wants to keep him. If he has a great year and Stearns won't up the offer, I expect Pete will move on, and the Mets will go after Guerrerro.

Look on the bright side. We are all winners right now. Or more to the point, not losers yet. The Cubs open camp on Sunday and everyone else opens up on Wednesday or Thursday. There might be a few on Monday and Tuesday, but they don't count. The Mariners are waiting until Thursday. I guess they don't think they need extra practice any more than they need to improve the roster. It must be nice to be perfect.

The Cubs have started. Dodgers and Rays start tomorrow. The rest start Wednesday and Thursday. I forget what sportsball thing we were just paying attention to. The Lamar Travis-Swift show or something. The real meaning of life, the universe and everything starts this week. It's not a coincidence that Jackie Robinson wore number 42.

It's a long season and all the casual / fairweather fans (and reporters 😂) probably don't care to talk about baseball yet. It's sad. I noticed as well on The Athletic, coverage of anything non-NFL for the last several months has been lacklustre. They're still reporting on the NBA, NHL, etc., but you have to dig deeper to find it. I don't even "follow" the NFL or any NFL teams on The Athletic, but football stories, power rankings, etc. are still all over my front page, and I have to scroll down to see the articles I actually want to read about the NHL, NBA / Toronto Raptors, and MLB offseason stuff (all topics that I do "follow" in my account settings on The Athletic). I'm not an NFL hater. Just not a big football fan, and I'm not sure why they have to keep shoving NFL articles in my face...

Back to baseball:

Anthony Rendon To Undergo Hip Surgery, Facing “Long-Term” Absence -- What an absolutely disastrous signing Rendon has been for the Angels! Since 2020, he has not even played 60 games in a single season for LAA. ~250 games or so across five seasons with the Angels. That's a lot of dollars for a part time player who hasn't even been very valuable when healthy. They owe him $38 million per year in 2025 and 2026 before they'll be rid of him.

Red Sox sign Bregman to three-year deal -- It's a $120 million deal with opt-outs after each year. That's a lot more per season than anybody expected Bregman to get, but fewer years. I think the Sox will be thrilled if he plays so well for them this year that he opts out in 2026. I kinda wish the Jays had made a similar offer. Hard to say how many really good years Bregman has left in him, but I think he's still going to be a very good player in 2025 at least. Curious to see how this contract works out for him.

Jays pitchers and catchers report today. Meanwhile, I had to dig out from piles of snow this morning... I wish I was in Dunedin too!
