Dodgers are getting as bad as the Yankees.

The Dodger and Angels families lost another member yesterday, Jeff Torborg. While Johnny Bench may have been the best catcher of his era with the bat, those of us growing up in SoCal thought Torborg was the better defensive catcher. RIP.

Less than two weeks until pitchers and catchers report to the Cubs' training camp. Then about a week longer for everyone else. Football is over when? Two weeks? So, there you have it. The cycle of life as it should be continues. The filler sport is almost done when the real sport starts up again. And of course, the Mariners are undefeated and in first place until they are not. That probably won't be too long, based on the lack of offseason activity. They have lots and lots of holes. The farm system is good, but I don't anticipate that they will find breakout candidates for 2nd, 3rd, and at least one corner outfield spot in spring training.

Holy hell, I laughed so hard reading this I could barely breathe.:roflmao:
"It's difficult for most of us owners to be able to do the kind of things that they're doing," Steinbrenner said..."

A Steinbrenner said this?! The owner of the freakin' YANKEES said this?!?!?!?! The team that outspent everyone else for decades on end? (And probably still could without breaking a sweat?)

I want the payroll gap between teams to be much narrower. But the lack of self-awareness from this guy is truly incredible.

Fixing that spending gap means teams, like the Rockies would actually have to reinvest their money into the team, instead of Bank, rolling it into the owners pocket

Spring Training Countdown

103 days, but who is counting? The Dodgers are not even home yet. That is fine. When I said it would be a couple of weeks, well, that may have been incorrect.

Time for the hot stove and pathological optimism. This is the year! You all know what I mean.
I am so stoked that the Pirates are getting ready to head to Florida for their annual paid vacation to relaxing the sun, Universal Studios, and Marlin fishing. Although we have a new batting coach, the core goals remain. Setting a league records in running up opposing teams’ pitch counts, looking at called third strikes, and tightening purse strings even further. The hope for this season is with a little luck there is a slight possibility, of hovering around a .400 winning percentage, but we’ve been cautioned not to be too optimistic.

Pitchers and catchers report to the Mariners camp on February 13. So, exactly two weeks from now I will start getting excited and pathologically optimistic, just like every year this time of year. The resigned Polanco to play third. He had an awful season last year playing second. Apparently he was injured, which had an effect on his range at second and his production at the plate. He doesn't need the same range at third. Maybe this will work. I'll start holding my breath now. At second, there's a bunch of guys, none of whom have produced much at the Major League level. Ryan Bliss was a bit of a spark at times, so I'm hoping he figures it out and comes through. For now, that's still a big, hopeful possibility rattling around in my head.
