MM S.U.B.

I know that the nut on EBMM Sterlings are slimmer.
I don't know much about the SUB's so I am just assuming that the nut on the SUB Sterling is slimmer than the SUB Ray. Also assuming that the heel for the Sterling and Ray are the same.
we all know what happens when you assume though. I could be completely wrong. Time to do some research...

The S.U.B. line was made in SLO. Same CnC machining for shape, routs, drilling, etc. This goes for the necks as well. They just used different wood for the bodies.

This being said, standard EBMM pickguards will drop in without a problem. For the life of me, I can't understand why some aftermarket pickguard providers are adamant that standard PGs will not fit S.U.B.s. You might want new pickguard screws tho, as the S.U.B screws are panhead (flat-bottom) and don't fit into the recessed holes on the replacement guards. I actually loved the look of the bigger chrome screw, but that's just me.

The tuners and bridges are not "Music Man" stamped. This is not to say they are not from the same manufacturer. The tuners may be Schaller (they're marked "PM" on the back instead of BM). I'm assuming they cut further cost corners by having their vendors skip the stamping/engraving process. The bridges are EXACTLY the same dimensionally tho, as I had a genuine MM bridge hanging around and it dropped in like butter.

As far as I could tell, the PUPs and pre were the same as their more expensive counterparts. I actually prefered the battery boxes as they attached from the inside as opposed to the 4 screws on the outside corners.

I've had a few S.U.B.s in my day. I used to like to soup them up aesthetically. Fun little projects at a good cheap jump-off point (my general rule of thumb was to never pull the trigger on one over $350 w/o a genuine MM case). The more beat to hell, the better as I would always contour the bod anyway and have Marty Bell give it a badass finish. I also "ebonized" (Invalid Link Removed) the rosewood boards to match that killer black neck.

They sound great! Virtually on par with EBMM's other 2-band offerings.

Here's a couple I had the foresight to take pics of:

Before (teal):

After, sporting my own contours, ebonized board, Hipshot HB1 tuners, aftermarket gloss black single-ply guard, EBMM molded case, and kickass Marty Bell Candy Orange re-fin:

And a recent white one that I decided to just simply stain the board as I actually loved the white finish...even with the gnarly diamond-plate guard (however, Itchy threw a black guard on after the fact, and it looked amazing):

Bottoms up,

Great jobs on those...especially liked the white on that damn ugly chrome pickguard.

Not convinced about the SUB Panhead V Pinhead screw debate but will believe you for time being. Prefer the more subtle dark grey passive with black pickguard but am thinking Abalone all over for the black monster.
