I'm genuinely curious, but have you tried Status basses? Wondering how they fare in comparison in your opinion. I tried a Modulus once, briefly so long ago I'd not like to comment beyond it was excellent.

Maybe I should have said "carbon necks" instead of "Modulus". I've never tried a Status. Played a Zon once but it was fretless.

Then again, wood necks are carbon necks...oh dear...

Preaching to the choir man. I was on the Tobias side of the boutique bass world, but still the same Bartolini T wind pickups. Not sure what voodoo Bill worked with those pickups, but nothing Bartolini has made since touches them. I learned the hard way after dropping the cash on my MTD 535 and not being able to get that kind of vibe out of it with anything Bartolini currently offers

Lol, I was 3 when he started making them. I got turned on to them by guys like TP on all the Fred Hammond, Iz, and Martha Munizzi records, which (unfortunately) was well after Gibson had ripped the company away from Mike and ruined his name by making trash basses. I had never heard a bass sound like that (which is what really pulled me into wanting to play bass) and thankfully I've at least been able to experience playing a couple pre-Gibson Tobiases. What I meant by "being on the Tobias side", was that was the tone/build/look I preferred when it came to boutique basses as a younger player.

You know what's sad is that back in the 70s and 80s Gibson actually used to make some pretty amazing basses. I used to have a Gibson Ripper and that was one of the premier funk Basses in the mid-seventies up to the mid 80s outside of a music man sabre

Unfortunately they got greedy like Fender and started buying up companies so they could kill them off
