Modulus Mob

Figured I'd share some pics of my Mod from last months session.

Also, the Modulus > Darkglass pedal > Trace combo was an extremely killer tone! Didn't wind up using it for the session but brought it along to see how well it records as I was worried that the clarity of the Modulus would make the noise floor in the pedal seem more apparent like other OD pedals but it doesn't, that thing is built great!

Welcome to the Mob. I have a 2005 Q5 with Bart / Bart and I just played a Q5 with the Aguilar OB-3 pre which I love. If I were you I would try that combo.

Thank you very much. I first heard a Modulus in a NYC shop on 48th street about 1995 or so. It was a five string and i was blown away with the sound of the B string. Not to long after i gave up playing. When i started again and the bass i traded for because available i had to have it. Played in a very small setting this morning and i have to say it sounded really nice. It has moved up to #1 bass.

I was thinking of keeping is simple and just staying with EMG but upgrading the preamp to a 3 band from EMG ... But i have heard some good things about u retro from john east (to name one of many) ... I have been out of it for a while and there are some many new things. So what happens you buy something install it and you do not like it .. return it?

Though my Q6 in the picture in the previous page is shown with EMGs, it actually has Lane Poors and a U-Retro. I'm a huge fan of the U-Retro and love the added control to boost the low bass to add some heft to the Quantum's inherent brightness. If I had to describe the preamp, it is like a clearer Bartolini on steroids with more mid control and much more useable treble controls.

The problem is that you have to ream out two of the pot holes larger to accomodate the larger pot shafts he uses for the stacked pots. If you swap back to an EMG or Bartolini preamp, the holes will still be completely covered, but it is worth noting.

Like Angus I have a Lane Poor in my FU4, I know not the same animal as a Quantum, but I put in a FlexCore pre and that combination opened up the bass. Like the John East pre's (which I love as well) the FlexCore is quite versatile and will impart clarity, transparency and brightness. And I did not have to modify the bass in any way to put it in - you can also configure the pre as they are made up of modular components.

The other advantage of using either of these pre's is the lack of or very little need to solder, especially the pickup leads so it makes it easier for you to experiment a little and try out different pickups if you decide you're not a fan of the EMGs - just a thought.

Once you install something, there is usually a no-return policy. So your best option would be to sell it here in the classifieds. You'll take a little hit on the cost, but East pre's usually go quite quickly. You could also try to find one used, that way if it doesn't suit your needs, you can sell it for pretty much what you paid for it.

I like the idea of the flex core preamp .. and I assume they will work with the EMG .. I was a bit surprised at the price. The lane poor's pickups seem to be very hard to get but right know I have the cash for pickups or preamp. Would you recommend the 9 or 18 volt?

I'm not totally familiar with EMG pickups, so I can not say for certain if they will work. I'm sure of the other mobsters can chime in about this.

Yes, Land Poors are somewhat unobtanium. If you have the funds for one or the other, I would start with the pre personally as this will give you more flexibility to help you find what you're looking for. I've found that 9 volt is plenty, unless you really need more head room, then go for 18 volt.

There is always the option of using an outboard pre. I know - even more stuff to confuse.

I contacted Mike Pope (I just heard back from him, a 20 min turn around on the email I sent him) and he said no problem ... Yes I agree better to go with the preamp first ... I thought about the outboard preamp but I rather have it available installed in my bass. ... My thinking on the 9 or 18 volt is it is better to have the headroom available if there is room (for the extra battery) and the cost is about the same... I'm going to wait a week or so to get any other opinions ... thank you for your input and time.
