Modulus Mob

Thanks for the info Kinetic and gwangi - I initially posted the wrong link from my phone, as I need a 5 string set for this bass (not 6). That said, it looks like the closest approximation would be...

These:

Or These:

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

My Modulus manual specifies the following:

String Gauges for Quantum Bass 4, 5 and 6
Quantum Bass 4:45-65-80-100
Quantum Bass 5: 45-65-80-100-130
Quantum Bass 6: 32-45-65-80-100-130
Nickel Roundwound, Extra Long Scale

This makes me think that it's the D'Addario set (the gauges all match), but the manual itself looks pretty outdated, so they certainly may have made the switch to Dunlop gwangi suggested above. What to do...

I say do what you want to do.

Those are screwy gauges for me. Having a .130 B string next to a .100 E string just doesn't feel right. I also think a .130 B string doesn't sound right. It's so thick that its stiffness is higher than the other strings, so its harmonic series starts getting weird and it has overtone components that are more like a vibrating bar than a vibrating string. A .120 B string feels and sounds more like the rest of the bass. It sounds more pure and less clangorous. It's still plenty deep.

But that's just me. YMMV, LOL, OMG and the other usual acronym disclaimers.

Thanks for weighing in Edwin - ultimately I will indeed do what I want to do... there are no rules :) I posted the initial question to see if the factory set was available somewhere, as I have enjoyed the way they sounded on my new Q5. Then again, maybe it's just that it's a killer bass and another type of strings would suit my playing even better. I've also been considering going in the opposite direction and trying the whole Mike/Phil approach with some Ken Smith Slick Rounds (though I play almost exclusively fingerstyle, so I don't know how that'd work out). We'll see...

You also brought up a good point about the .130 B string. I tend to like the sound it produces, but I'd definitely agree that it feels like it doesn't quite fit... too rigid. What's your go-to set on your Q6?

Sunbeams, 30-120. Like the factory strings, they are nickel. I've tried the Slick Rounds and liked them pretty well, although they have a higher tension and my truss rod-less TBX doesn't like that. Definitely a good tone for pick work and it's still possible to get a decent slap tone. However, they don't feel quite as responsive as the Sunbeams.

Thanks for your input sleepy - just to clarify, how long ago did Joe tell you that? Just wondering if it was before or after they switched to Dunlop... at this point, it seems like both D'Addario and Dunlop would both provide a set fairly similar to what Modulus ships with. I'm also interested in Edwin's DRs, as it makes sense to have a B that matches up a bit better. All other recommendations are most welcome!

These are what I use: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
I concur with previous opinions - the 130 B string just doesn't fit in well with the rest of the strings feel wise or tone wise. I would certainly even go to a 120 B if they made the DR Nickel lowriders with it.

Call them up. It might be possible or already available.

So I'm awaiting the arrival of some new lightweight tuners to correct the neckdive on my Q5. I decided to prep early and remove the tuners, so I thought I'd snap few pics. It's a view we rarely see, if ever!

According to Kinetic Shadow, they are direct replacements. They look identical except for the Modulus logo is not on the back.

That is an affirmative on the direct replacement.

The shaft is actually more of a straight post and does not have the contour to "guide" the string wrap. Reminds me more of a Hipshot post. But again, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference if you didn't know or weren't looking for it.

Right, you did mention the string post is not contoured when we spoke about it last week.

I'll have pics and results when they're installed!
