Modulus Mob

Another +1 for snatching up that $500 Q5 ...but if you have a local luthier or guitar technician who's familiar with Modulus instruments, maybe have him/her do the initial set-up. That way if there are any problems with that neck you won't get in too deep money-wise before dicovering what you have.

Bring a set o Allen wrenches and screw drivers and maybe a new set of strings and do a 15 minute setup on the instrument. If the neck is too bowed to play comfortably, your only recourse is to ship it to a graphite neck specialist and have them fix it for around $400, more or less, plus shipping. It's probably fine, to be honest, but there is a risk. If its really beat up, if there's electronic problems, if you have to buy a case, or if it has tuner/bridge issues, you could possibly get upside down on the bass, but it's not likely.
Post some pics hen you get it.

I just finished a refurb of my 1990 Q6. I put in a set of SGD ND3 pickups along with an ACG EQ01. To get everything squared away, I also shimmed the neck a bit to be able to get the action as low and smooth as I've always wanted it to be. It's been a great bass that I've had in one configuration or another for 15 years, but now it's finally playing like I always hoped it would. I haven't had a chance to really crank it up yet, but the SGD pickups really seem to take the EMG clanky edge off and yet they are still very present and quick sounding. I can't wait to bring it to a gig, but all of a sudden I've got a week off.

I'll take some pictures and post them. The only thing left to do is find some knobs. I had the original ACG knobs stored away somewhere, but it's been a good number of years since I've used the preamp, so whether they'll be easily found or not is an open question.

Possibly due to to some of the recent purchases in this thread, I'm thinking seriously about expanding my Modulus arsenal. I'm currently eyeing the VJ4 on eBay (burst finish / tort pick guard) - to me it looks like a pretty good deal. It's nice and clean (especially for a 2001) without any major flaws. Has anyone owned a similar one? Do you think this is a good deal? Would you pass on this one? If so, why? I just want some input from the Mob before making a potentially terrible (read: great) decision.

PS Thanks for the GAS, Pete ;)

A quick setup and I got it in decent shape, so I am now the proud owner of a Q5! :D

Took a few pics...

Looks like someone scratched an 'L' into the front & back, and they really scratched up the finish between the pickup and bridge:

There's some more photos here: https://imgur.com/a/tFEgI

The tuners are pretty worn, so I will have to replace those soon - any recommendations?

All in all not too bad for the money, pretty happy with it. A little work and it'll be a great bass!

Wow, congrats!

But seriously what did they do between the bridge and pickup and that giant W? Maybe someone's kid was playing with a screwdriver :D

Again congrats, it's got some mojo, but if it's good to go functionally, you could have it refinished for under $300 and still come out way ahead.
