Modulus Mob

Yeah, me too, but i guess it depends how bad you want it... Flea/Funk Unlimiteds are going for crazy $$$ and one of the gc's in chicago had one sitting on the wall for like 7 years (gone now, I think).

I hear ya'- I had a guy come by a few weeks ago to buy my Boss GT-10B and he didn't bring a bass, so I let him use my Q5. He was a nice guy and a good player, but he kept raving about how great the Quantum was. It is, however, most definitely not for sale.

Seeing as how we're both Lakland and Modulus guys though, I gotta' admit, I am loving my 55-94. Not the same thing at all, and as I said in my post on the Lakland owner's forum, it made me appreciate my Modulus more, but if push came to shove, I could get another 55-94.

True, very true. Pardon, the segue mobsters just going to discuss Lakland necks briefly :)

When Modulus was still in business I had a thought once that Lakland and Modulus should get together and created a new neck using the Modulus tech and Lakland neck profile from the 94 series, including the "shoulder-less" transition from the back of the neck to fretboard. I would still want the compound radius of the Modulus neck though and in satin finish of course - that would be my dream neck.

And like you, as much as I love my Laklands, there's just something about the Modulus that sets it apart, not better per se, but I will say that when it comes to recording, I almost always end up using the Modulus :D

Hey Mobsters! I'm doing a complete cleaning and setup of my '91 Q5 (EMGs) and was wondering if anyone might have information they can share regarding factory pickup height settings? I'm interested in the dip switch settings on the preamp too but that's not as important at the moment. I had the factory info years ago but can't seem to find it now that I actually need it. :) Any help is appreciated!

You did, and I did! Thanks for the heads up.

It was so close to being level that I couldn't tell with my eyes the first time. The second time, I just adjusted one saddle screw an 1/8th of a turn while doing the opposite to the other to keep the height where I like it.

About 3 times repeated (not even half a turn) and she became silent.... er..... loud and full!!

Not quite Modulus, but





As stated earlier, I seem to be currently splitting my allegiances between Modulus and Lakland. Around Chicago, Carl's set-ups are the standard, fyi.

I would assume that this could at least serve as a starting point for the Quantum, this is what I have for my FU.

String Height:
5/64" from 12th Fret to E
4/64" from 12th Fret to G

Pickup Height:
Adjust pickup height to 8/64" from bottom of strings when depressed at 22nd Fret.

This would be for the bridge pickup in your case. As a rule of thumb I usually go about 2/64" more for neck pickups. Keep in mind though that not all pickups are alike - even from the same manufacturer and line, so I would use the above and below as a starting point and then use your ear to adjust from there.

As Fred mentioned above, Carl has some great setup tips, you can search for Carl Pedigo on YouTube or check out the Link Removed for videos. For the closest analog to the Q5 you could set the pickup height at the following for a 55-01.

Bridge E/B= 7/64" G= 7/64"
Neck E/B= 9/64" G= 9/64"

Glad I could help :)

Sometimes it's visually obvious and sometimes, as in your case, not. If I ever even suspect that the rattle may be coming from a saddle, I just press down on it with one finger and give it a little wiggle (no dirty jokes) to identify the culprit.
