I'm no scientist, but WD40 removes moisture, so cleaning the board regularly should help prevent this, no?
Many moons ago, I had an old car with an electrical aystem that abosrbed moisture everytime it rained hard and wouldn't start. Used to spray the distributor cap with wd40 and be good to go in 5 minutes.

Well WD40 doesn't remove moisture at all- it's a low-viscosity oil with an oil-based propellant that is particularly useful when you need a lubricant to penetrate (because of the low viscosity). The propellant and solvent used to suspend it evaporate, which is probably partly why you feel like it removes moisture, but in reality it doesn't. The oil will act as a barrier for moisture to get in, but will also trap whatever moisture is underneath that oil surface. The benefit of WD-40 with the fingerboard is that it a) penetrates into the very tiny pores that phenolic/plastics have, b) the solvent in the WD-40 will clean finger oil/grime off the fingerboard, and c) it will form a temporary moisture barrier to reduce changes in hydration of the fingerboard.

But none of this foolproof because no matter what you are going to get changes in moisture content over time, so its still largely a crapshoot. And none of this addresses the neck side of things- the epoxy medium can absorb moisture over time as well.

You should ask them- the neck dimensions are a little different (the newer ones go to the neck pickup, there's no wood between the neck and the neck pickup). I KNOW I've seen one on here that length with a truss rod though, so they do exist.
if the mold is still intact I imagine they would be able to. I know a few molds did break over the years so I'd contact Joe Perman or Planet bass to ask.

So out of 15 quantums you've owned, 9 have had their necks go bad?
I just got my first modulus and that's pretty scary. Based on those odds wood would be more stable!

What's the consensus on the new modulus company when it comes to handling stuff like this. Will they fix/replace an old modulus neck at a reasonable price?
The fingerboard is the issue, not the necks. I've not heard of a case substantiated yet where the neck itself failed. Phenolic is another case..

Sold my Vertex and the monkey who bought is returning it because it isn't active and he says there is no such tbing as EMGs that aren't active. What a putz
did you show them a pic of an emg vs. emg hz pickup? did you point to them the little rectangular item in the control cavity called a 'battery'? if the buyer still confused-ed, here's a pic from me to them... :banghead: :D

Don't know if this is the right place to post this, but the last show I played it was pretty dark on stage, and I missed a couple frets a handful of times on my modulus - thought it could be a good idea to put some sort of glow in the dark where the dots are on the side of my fretboard... any thoughts on that? i.e. the safest option for the phenolic fingerboard (even though its just the side / no dots on face of fingerboard)

On an unrelated note - I'm not sure if my modulus is messing up some of my effects. I use an auto wah and a Boss OC-2 pedal, and when strings are struck with somewhat of a force, it sounds like it is about to blow the speaker or something. I know the signal is super hot, and I love my modulus for that, but I am afraid it is "too" hot for some effects pedals. Any experience? maybe a compressor first in the chain?

Thank you for reading
