Modulus Mob

Heya ModulusFriends... I heart my 2009 Flea 4-string, but it's heavy -- weighs in at 9.8 lbs! Are there any Moduli 4s that are lighter? I see Mr. G. Gould has some 4-string that about 2-lbs lighter... anyone thumped one of those? Thx!

4" straps work good for that weight, that is what I'm using for my Q5.

Examples:

Amazon.com: Walker & Williams Super Wide 4" Double Padded Top Grain Dark Brown Leather Bass Strap: Musical Instruments

Amazon.com: Levy's Leathers MSS2-4-BLK 4 Garment Leather Signature Series Bass Guitar Strap, Black: Musical Instruments

My Franken VJ is my lightest bass, weighing in at 7.5 lbs.

Love that Franken VJ -- how did you build it? How did you get the neck? I've been thinking of getting a Moses Graphite neck and a slim, chambered body from Wamoth... but I love the sound and feel in my Flea and I worry that a parts bass just won't cohere as well.

That's a good idea... currently using a 3"-wide Planet Waves strap -- tried a wide strap that was flexible, but it didn't seem to make any difference... at the end of the day, it's still a heavy bass!

...

Thanks! I bought the neck on Ebay and mated it to a lightweight paulownia body. I owned a factory VJ and while the fit and finish on that bass was superior, my Franken VJ plays and sounds perfectly fine, especially considering how much money I have into it.

Status Graphite necks are much closer in design and construction to a Modulus neck. There's also a lot of not so great reviews of Moses Graphite in regards to both product quality and customer service. I've heard nothing but good about Status.

Once saw a picture of a Moses neck cut in half so you could see the inner structure. I'm not an doctorate level engineer who specializes in carbon fiber, but I know a bit about it. The Moses neck looked to be rather crudely constructed by today's standards, and the overall design was nothing like any typical current day CF designs.

i concur.

as someone who's owned a moses neck, i can say that a moses neck does not feel, play, or sound like a kld neck.

i haven't played a status neck in eons so can't comment there.

maybe try and snag a 'cheap' modulus four-stringer online, ape the neck and then have a super-light body made. my vote would be for red cedar. sounds great and is very light.

I see the preamp on the picture that was removed, seems to be an EMG BQC system like the one it came on my Q5 which is bass/treble stack and Mid/Sweep stack. I guess that fits the 3band you are looking for. And it already have the EMG pickups is just a matter to re-wire it.

Old ones did not have quick connect but the connections are easy to figure out.

Oh, yeah... Check that out. Didn't catch that. I wonder if the previous owner yanked out the 3-band and put in a two band, for some reason. I'll have to install that and see how I like the sound. Also, I decided to keep it. Give it some TLC. The shop comped me for a set of Fatbeams at full retail price.

I've seen some Quantum's with completely different bridges... What do you guys recommend for a replacement bridge? And some Bart pups? I was looking through their website, and it's alot to take in - WAY more choices than I thought. I'd like some humbucks with a passive/active switch, and (if possible) series-parallel-single coil switch.

Bridge, well, mine came with Hipshot and I use Hipshot normally, so I replaced that one that was in bad shape with one I purchased from Modulus directly, they a B stock of bridges at an excellent price, you could contact Tony at Modulus and see what they have on stock.

For pickups, I'm considering switching out all the EMG stuff and put a Nordstrand Preamp and the BigRig pickups, take a look at those pickups (I do not like much the EMG sound). I actually switched the preamp to Nordstrand but switched back to the EMG because the EMG pickups were not working right with the Nordy preamp.

Pickups:
Bigrig 5 Dual Coil
[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (you can coil split this one)

Preamp:
3 Band Preamps
I have this one that I plan to use: 3B-4b - PREWIRED – 3 band bass preamp with volume/tone stack, blend, mid (pull frequency switch), and treble/bass stack

The hipshot a style bridge is pretty much the standard bridge now- Modulus and Roscoe use them as stock, as I am sure other brands that I am forgetting. I am personally not a fan of the ABM bridges, as they're a pain to set up. Not sure the brand of bridge hours came with, but it looks fine to me- quick release and screws for intonation (one of the thongs I don't like about ABM and older Spector bridges is no intonation screws).

A Style Bass Bridges > Store > Hipshot Products.

As far as pickups, have fun- there's a bajillion options put there. Just remember you've got the EMG 45 size, so the Bart P2 size is too narrow. I personally like the EMG tone, but different strokes for different folks.

my go-to onboard setup are bartolini 72m45c's into an aguilar obp-3. the obp-3 gives you the option of passive/active switching either thru a push/pull vol. knob or a mini-switch. if you want a little more 'zip' from your pickups, the aguilar dcb's are nice. recently installed delano sbc's into a glock pre into a parts bass. same tone vein as the aggie setup with a little more 'wool' (don't want to say it's darker; less 'forward' sounding maybe?).

what's wrong with the ABM bridge? i usually go with a hipshot b-style. lately have tried out (and liked) the new omega bridges that look like a modern version of the bada$$ V. there will be no neck-dive if you install this heavy mass of metal. :)
