Modulus Mob

ah, thanks very much. will abandon said endeavors.

are pieces of carbon fiber available on the open market? paying $300 for an authentic modulus control cavity is a bit out of the price range.
Dragon Plate has CF veneer that you could use on top of your existing control plate or pickguard. They also have thicker stuff available if you want to cut yourself a completely new plate or pickguard. Very reasonable prices.

not sure if it's 'raw'. feels like when you drag your fingers over an umbrella. i got this off of a seller who uses this to cover their car parts (hoods and such) so it looks like the entire piece was made of carbon fiber.

i'm assume that it should be able to take a beating since it was made to withstand the elements. but definitely wouldn't want to have this cut me up either...

That's a process that's basically identical to laying fiberglass on a male mold. Lay the fabric on, soaked in resin, let it set, then build up a finish coat on top using your material and method of choice. The fabric is not left exposed to the elements. You could do that, but it's a fair bit of work, and your project doesn't need contours like a car hood, etc. - you just need a flat plate, so it'll be much simpler to get some good quality CF veneer.

IMHO, $105 for a guard and back plate is crazy expensive! I mean, the back cover on my GGoulds are ugly, but not $105 ugly. Maybe $15 ugly

$105 was the total for both pieces shipped. One off made pieces of carbon fiber which is a very expensive material. A custom cut plastic pickguard costs 75-100 on any normal bass. Modulus has to be custom cut, every one is a little different. If Modulus really wants $300 for a rear cover, relatively speaking this is a steal. Of course you can cover the original with something to improve the appearance, but adding weight for a lightweight appearance is pretty uh.......you choose.

Ah, OK. You got a CF pickguard and control plate custom made because it looks lightweight?

Interesting, I think the other folks just want it 'cause it looks cool and even though it's not KLD it kinda goes with the Modulus/CF thing.

12"x12" sheet of high quality veneer from Dragon Plate is $28, and you can cut it with heavy scissors. And some people kinda like being crafty, DIY projects, etc.

But fair warning - putting a veneer on your control plate may add a gram or two to the weight of your bass, which digresses from the impression that CF = lightweight, so proceed with caution. The oxymoron/paradox/irony police may track you down and issue you a citation.

(If you're happy with your purchase and feel you received good value, good for you! Enjoy, be happy! There's no need to insinuate that people are pretty uh.... for wanting a cheaper DIY alternative.)

I actually made a carbon fiber cover out of .010" for my modulus parts jazz bass. I cut it with scissors and bought the sheet off of ebay. It turned out, OK...however very flimsy. On this bass I was trying to go lightweight everything mostly for fun...but yes, the looks were my primary motivation too. No judgment. Now if this were for a civic :D

i am going to swap out tuners and bridge today. Is it ok to take all the strings off and do this quickly? It wont mess the neck up because of lack on tension

In a thread about nearly any other brand of bass this question would be perhaps understandable, but the answer would be "It's okay, nothing will get messed up."

In a thread about Modulus basses ?!?! They really need to up their marketing game if you don't already know the answer! :)

It's okay, nothing will get messed up.
