Modulus Mob

Here's an update of my 2006 restoration. Going pretty slow. Still no engine. I ended up just keeping a touch of gold on the headstock on back side of the tuners. Looks much more subtle.

Nice job on that cavity. Mine’s at the Lakland shop currently getting some slight routing and copper foil as well...

Cavity routing? what are you adding in there?
Just switching to EMG’s- since the circuit boards are mounted to the pots, and I insist on 3 band eq, the spot for the batteries needed to be trimmed back a little. I’m not very good at it, I am paying a professional to do it.

why the copper foil? the emgs dont need it and it casues more trouble than good I think. Just make sure none of the solder side of the circuit boards on the pre amp are touching the wall or they will short to ground and no sound. I learned the confusing and hard way lol!

One of these days I need to start following that line of thinking. Notice how I never chime in on those "show me your electronics compartment" threads? Yeah, that's 'cuz my workmanship is fugly.
Functionally Ugly? If it works, that’s good enough for me. Mine isn’t even that good.

That being said, I fixed both my furnace and dryer (although I’m sure it took me about 10x as long as a pro), but neither of those involved soldering or cutting, just taking apart and putting back together (and watching how-to youtube videos :D ).

I like how it looks, and if I replace the emg’s (or sell the bass to someone who wants to) it’ll need some shielding. I’ll keep in mind about the touching though, if there are any issues.

Alright - finally put this beast together. I will never ever do a makeover on someone else's bass as long as I live haha. Every part is new (pickups, preamp, bridge, tuners, knobs...) except the body and neck. Very much an undertaking, glad i'm done. This bass won't look this good again...now to start playin for cryin out loud.

Clarification - this is my bass haha...but I wouldn't want to go through this again for another person, unless I owed them something big. I really loved it, but it was very tedious - probably because I just wanted to finish and play it. I have people asking me do upgrades on their basses, and I have to say no.

I feel ya! I bought a used 2003 Q5 that needed some TLC even though it was still in good condition. I replaced the strap buttons, bridge, pickups, volume pot, bass/treble pot, and the bass/treble knobs. I thoroughly enjoy working on my basses and, now that I think of it, just about everything that I own has seen some work by me.

They said it's wired in the J-bass layout - HR-4.6ap.."J"../918. So, we'll see. But you're right, nothing is ever completely easy when you are not putting it together yourself, especially for your own control cavity. At least I'll be closer. I'll let you know when it comes in how far off it is...might have to pull the s-iron out though.
Did you have any issues installing the preamp?

I love Bartolini, but the person wiring the harness that day must have been hung over. 'Suitable' but somewhat sloppy. No where near the neatness of the photo I uploaded. Took me a few days, off and on, stretching out the crumpled and bent up wire into neat rows, like they come from the Modulus shop (who knows, maybe Modulus has to comb through the preamps to get them looking sharp and good as well). As far as fit, each pot had plenty of wire for the Quantum layout, no problems at all.
