I'm GASSING for a modulus q5 or q6. I currently have a Lakeland 5502, which I love, but Gas is a real thing. I wonder, for those who have experience with both, how do the necks compare? Thickness, playability, comfort, etc, ? Yes, I know its all subjective, and "play before you buy", but any comparison would be helpful.

I own a Lakland 55-02D, a Modulus Quantum-6 SPX, and a Modulus Quantum-6 TBX. All three have very different widths, although the string spacing on the TBX seems fairly close to the 55-02D so the difference is mostly due to 5- versus 6-strings. Thickness-wise both Modulus necks feel slimmer front-to-back; I guess you would call them a very shallow C or D profile? Whereas the Lakland has that asymmetrical shape that is quite comfortable, but difficult to characterize in terms of alpha-geometric archetypes
They're all exceedingly "playable".

This may very well be my most favorite Modulus I have! Such fun to play this beautiful bass

Sorry, if this is a repeat, but here’s a clip of Fernando Saunders, playing the identical bass, with different pick ups, on the Grammys:
It is pretty similar, but this was in 1998. Lou's bassist would have been using a later model of my bass. The logo is the same, but tuners are much different and the body still is different. Not sure, but the man himself might know the difference. @GeoffGould

I stand somewhat corrected. Here was Fernando Saunders actual bass that sold on Reverb from that grammy show! It was a 1988 model. But it certainly does look like a standard string spacing. Mine is very tight. 16mm or a bit less.

Is ^^^that blue bass the one Fernando was pictured with in a Guitar Player Magazine article sometime in the late 1980s? Had a full page photo on the right side, article started on the left facing side...I think that was where I first read about Fernando A) using flatwound strings on the EADG but a roundwound low B, simply because he couldn't find any low B flats...or maybe it was the other way around? and B) where he talked about plucking with his first and third fingers because they were the same length, and hence yielded similar sound, versus using index and middle fingers which were of unequal length and hence yielded different sounds?

There may be...but Fernando wasn't on the cover, it was just a full page photo inside the magazine, and I don't recall who the cover artist for that issue was. But "the only blue fretless 5-string Modulus I’m aware of" sounds pretty authoritative!
...which reminds me: Some time in the late 1980s or perhaps very early 1990s I played a green fretless 4-string Modulus at a tiny music shop in NYC's Lower East Side. (Wish I'd bought it!) I don't suppose you have any recollections about that one? Thanks.

I recently changed my string from Daddario XL 130 to DR nickel LoRider 130. DR definitely has much more growl and power than XL so it can shine in the mix easily. It is stiffer on my hand than XL but not hard to get used to.
However, the biggest thing I didn't like about LoRider was the B string. It's been 2 weeks but when compared to the C-G-D-A string, the B string sounds like more than a half-year used string. Too dull and not clear at all. It was my last shot for DR but not satisfied with any strings I ever used.
My close luthier suggested NYXL from Daddario so I might try that one if I'm about to change the string.
