had a similar situation. been using dr sunbeams (nlr5-40's) for ages. but on one particular situation, i strung up my q5 and the 'b' string didn't match up and sounded 'off'. a suggestion was made to try a d'addario nyxl taper-core 'b' string. ordered a .130 instead of a 'normal' .120 just to see what the tension and tone would be.I recently changed my string from Daddario XL 130 to DR nickel LoRider 130. DR definitely has much more growl and power than XL so it can shine in the mix easily. It is stiffer on my hand than XL but not hard to get used to.
However, the biggest thing I didn't like about LoRider was the B string. It's been 2 weeks but when compared to the C-G-D-A string, the B string sounds like more than a half-year used string. Too dull and not clear at all. It was my last shot for DR but not satisfied with any strings I ever used.
My close luthier suggested NYXL from Daddario so I might try that one if I'm about to change the string.
the stings matched up perfect. tone was even across the spectrum. in this case, it definitely worked for me.
