Modulus Mob

I like everything about my 1983 MM SR except the weight and the weak G string.
Would a Flea bass solve the about items?
Does a Flea sound anything like a SR?
TIA

I think a flea bass sounds more like a modulus than a stingray. The stingray note envelope is so specific, its got that "brapp" and a spikey output, then most people DBX compress it down into something a little more streamlined.

The flea is a much more "refined" sounding, with lots of sustain, and very even response. Its a "sweet spot humbucker" sound, but the natural sound of the bass is very modulus, and the pickups used are also nowhere near as aggressive as the EBMM stuff.

This is coming from somebody that loves both.

I'm back in the "Mob" after a too-long hiatus with a matched pair of Flea 5s in different pickups configs. Didn't really mean to get two, but after going gaga over the lane-poor equipped MM one, when the JJ presented itself as a trade I thought "why not?" :D

I think they need tort guards, otherwise they're amazing. The MM could be the best 5 I've ever had.

These two have got me GASing for one of the new 34" scale quantums. Does anybody here have one?

I also think the JJ might be a little better with some more true-J sounding pickups. These are bartolini linear humbuckers, they're a little on the dark n' puffy side for me, though I can EQ them into something pretty happening, since the mid cut on this bass is right in that "puffy" zone (300-something hz). Any suggestions for a crisper set that would fit and have the right string spacing, radius, etc? I was looking at single coil, "bright" bartolini CB set thinking that could be a nice compromise between the full on bart sound I've got now and more of a J tone.

When I play the JJ after the Lane Poor MM ... the difference in brightness and quickness is LARGE.

What pickups are in Me'shell's VJs?

Well I'm happy to be a long standing Modulus owner and happy to join the Mob.

I started with an FB4 I bought around 2000. Then I bought an FB5 here around 2001. It was white but I soon had it refinished in silver. I got interested in them due to Stefan Lessard and have never looked back. The bass is phenomenal, bright and clear, and always gets me noticed in the mix. I can't tell you how many people have come up to me and been surprised that they can actually hear what I'm playing instead of just a thump in the PA.

Oh and it's got a Lane Poor pickup.

I'll post pics when I get on my computer again.

D, I have 3 VJs (2 fretted and 1 fretless) all with Nordstrand and Audere.

I love this combination and it works really good.
I have found not issue in with the radius what so ever.

I'm using 60's wind straight single coils on the fretted and NJ4SV on the fretless.

I know you dig that Sadowsky grind and the above is closer to that over the Barts with a little more evenness to it and sophistication. I honestly think its the best of both worlds.

I may check with Carey to see if he can do a 5-string pickup with the right size and spacing ... I wonder what the nords would sound like with the bartolini preamp ... that thing is wired up so neat and nice it'd be nice to not swap it.

Hmmm...Not sure how that would sound...Modulus does do a cool job with that routed battery compartment.

I had a funk 5 (sweet spot) and miss it...But the J where working for so much of what I was doing.

Yeah let Carey know that you have the 17mm spacing...I think the widths on the J are standard.

PM coming your way.

Sorry for the crappy cellphone pics.....

But to make that up, I did add a recording with the Modulus FB4. No slapping and popping, but some soft dynamic fingerpicking and a tiny little bit of tapping....Signal chain is Modulus FB4 > Korg DT10 > Comp > Valvedrive > Delay > Ashdown EVO 500 > Ashdown 4x10 > Studio Projects mic > mixer > soundcard > computer...there's a DI signal as well....anyways.....enjoy...or not.....
