Mogami Patch Cables

Hi all!:D

I have always been happy with the idea that I use great gear, and it suddenly dawned on me that my rig is severely lacking in quality in the cable department (!!)

I have just placed a $ question to MOGAMI to order:

4 x Platinum Series (highest quality, most expensive) 11 inch patch-cables for my pedal-board
2x Platinum Series 20ft (one right-angle) Bass-cables
1x Gold Series Speaker Cable

Money is not much of an object to me, as long as the gear is of high quality, and reliable.

My question is: has anyone had experience with Mogami gear?

More specifically, is there quality of tone with Mogami cables? are they reliable? are there guarantees on the products?

Any and every piece of information will be appreciated, thanks!

I don't have any experience with the Platinum series but my entire signal chain is connected with Mogami's Gold series instrument cables and patches. I made the switch to Mogami about a year ago and I haven't looked back. Tremendous shielding and some of the best connections money can buy.

I don't imagine I will ever need to use it, but their cables do have a life time guarantee.

Money's no object aside, I added those cables up and that is around $500. Unless your getting a heavy discount or mogami is giving you the cables free, I would leave them at the store.

I have three instrument cables, one that I made from ProCo cables and neutrik plugs, one first act walmart cable I bought in a bind, and a mogami that a recording engineer insisted that I have because it apparently it has magical powers. Truth be told I can't tell the difference between the three without looking at them.

Find a cable with good shielding,plugs and a lifetime warranty. There is no need to drop that kind of money on cables.

I make all of my cables myself from Neutrik+Klotz...Never had any issues.

That said, I've never tried a 'boutique' cable. But from studying physics and engineering for the last 4 years, I can say with 99% confidence that I don't want to. The websites are full of pseudo-science and marketing jargon. Even if the cables do sound better, I don't really want to buy from a company that uses big words and clever sounding language to make their products look good; I much prefer the truth.

Cables do have a difference in capacitance and other properties that affect tone. Of course, patch cables will not have the same impact as changing a 20 foot cable from one brand to another would. Still, how long do you think a cable will last? Depending on how you treat them, they should last a number of years and perhaps a lifetime. It makes more sense to get something good to begin with rather than go cheap and save perhaps a penny a day and not know if you are really getting the tone you should--or even if it will work someday when you need it. :cool:

Anyways...

I have two gold 20' Mogami cables (one right angle) that I received from my wife for Christmas and I like them a lot. I am an active musician and about half the time have had boutique cables pushed on me to use in the studio, while the other half of the time, the producer has paid no attention to my cabling at all. That said, if it were not for the lifetime warranty, I probably would have exchanged them for something else, but knowing I can abuse the crap out of them on stage and have them replaced no questions asked makes them worth the extra. I don't however believe that you need to spend that much on patch cables for your board as those receive little abuse and movement if they remain stationary.

Buy them for the replacement warranty alone. You will not hear the benefits (whether they exist or not) live nor in most studio situations unless perhaps you are recording through the finest preamps and boards into Pro Tools HD. At this point, it may be justifiable to spend a lot on your cabling.

Of course, if you have the finest gear that money can buy regarding every piece of your rig, and the cables are they only thing short of perfection...send a money order to Portland, OR c/o me.;)

People make snide remarks because it's a massive scam, that screws ignorant people out of tons of money because they lack basic physics knowledge and are easily impressed by pseudo-scientific babble. Granted, life time replacement whatever is awesome, and if that's the reason to buy it more power to you. But thinking it affects sound quality is demonstrably, factually incorrect.

Well, as I made the first snide remark, I thought maybe I should put my money where my mouth is.

Actually, I have two Mogami Gold instrument cables... along with a few others. So, I just recorded six cables. I know it's not scientific like Bongo's spectrum analysis, but I recorded the same riff, at the same volume.

The cables (not in order) are:

Planet Waves (20')
Whirlwind Leader Elite (20')
Mogami Gold (20')
Mogami Gold (10')
Coiled Whirlwind (10')
Road Hog (VTG Audio) (10')

All y'all who think you can tell which is the Mogami Gold post your guesses... I'll post the actual order a little later. Have fun!

It's absolutely fine to educate people. Stating that someone is "buying into the placebo effect", or calling them a fool is not constructive. Though I agree that there is much marketing hype behind everything, (I'm an industrial designer) the only reason it works is because we are not all engineers or physicists.

True, I have been buying the local guitar shops labled brand made by Rapco for many years and they too have a lifetime warranty. It's a good thing too since I originally bought three cables and have replaced each of them at least once. Regardless, lifetime warranties are awesome.
