I ask mostly out of curiosity - I've owned several Moon basses, spanning from the 80s to my custom JJ-4 that was made last year! The older JJ-4s really have a magic about them, and they also tend to be quite heavy. But yeah sure, "in my day we had to walk uphill both ways!"

I can attest to this, mostly, my Atelier Z is very heavy, but god the sound is irreplaceable. It's Alder too not Ash, my other light weight Atelier Z doesn't sound as good, even tho it's the same strings.

Question for you Moon owners. In this video at 7:40 he talks about this pull 'nasal' switch on an 80's Moon. It's actually a phase switch. I have a passive walnut JJ4 with the same knobs and electronics from that era but it doesn't have the pull up switch. Where these only Moons with certain pickups? (mine has EMG's). Or is it a mod? I am really curious cause I like that sound for certain things (solos). Could mine with EMG's be modded to have this? Thanks.

Not to digress, but I’d be curious to know what the impedance of the pots in your bass are, and what the tone control capacitor is. EMG usually asks for different specs.

I also have never seen that phase switch. But he also has a white 83 Moon that also has that. I guess some Moons had that and others don’t? Maybe only the white ones had that as a special feature?

I have no idea about the pots and capacitors of my Moon. How can I tell?

Most likely an 80s. Because of the pickup switch and trussrod acces at the body side.
