I used to play bagpipes and if they are properly in tune then they sound sweet. If the chanter is slightly sharp then they sound horrible. Any instrument not properly tuned and played will sound horrible to me.drool

We are all here because we love music and bass obviously, but is there an instrument that just makes you cringe every time you hear one? I'm not talking about just having a disdain for an instrument because you couldn't play it well; I'm talking about fingers-on-the-chalkboard or break-your-finger-changing-the radio-station annoying. For me it is the recorder. There can't be a more annoying sound than a room full of recorders just piercing my eardrums with shards of painful squeals and high C's.

What instrument when you hear it (if any), just rubs you the wrong way?

Paddle faster! I hear banjo music!!!!

Well, any instrument played poorly doesn't sound good.
Recorder played by kids, awful. Recorder played by professional recorder player, sounds good. Bagpipes played by a beginner, doesn't sound good. Bagpipes played by a skilled bagpiper, sounds good.
Music is subjective so you may not like certain instruments regardless of whether it is played by a beginner or a professional. I don't like to share my personal feelings because I am not out to bash another music genre or instrument.

The most annoying instrument would be B8 alloy sheet cymbals, if you see cymbals as instruments. B20 alloy is a bronze cymbal (sheet or cast) that sounds good. B8 is cheap. B12 is in between and sounds better than B8 but not as good as B20.

Bob Dylan/Neil Young-style harmonica.

I like when someone rocks hard on a harmonica and really jams, but I can't stand the guy singing, playing guitar, and having a harmonica strapped to his chest and he just breathes in and out of it.

This is right up there for me too. If someone is really good at it I love it. But to just suck and blow two note chords and call that music hurts my head.

A beginning student on a violin or an oboe.
They compare unfavorably to cats crying or ducks quacking.

Harmonica. I love Stevie Wonder on the chromatic harp, but everything else is pretty hard to take. John Popper is ok in small doses. But standard blues harp, or singer-songwriter harp - horrid.

But I REALLY dislike the ukulele and wish that all of these twee, toy "instruments" could be rounded up and swiftly rocketed into our sun.

I confess that I forgot about that. I am NO fan of harmonica except in very small doses. Kind of like caviar only not as special.

I'd like to take this opportunity to ask what kind of a parent buys their kid a drum set to learn? I'm guessing the kind with a detached garage or soundproof basement!

Seriously ... I absolutely love such an essential instrument, but I think if I were a parent, I would probably encourage my child to learn something that's not bangy or shrilly .... like the bass!
