Will Hegie and later Simon Raymonde were very creative bass players.

Wax and Wane from the album Garlands is mostly bass, in whichever role.

Although some of these are more Dark Wave, check out the bands French Police, Twin Tribes, Soft Kill, and Drab Majesty. Drab Majesty is the only one without bass guitar, but they just might be my favs. The synth bass is amazing with the chorus guitars like on "Unknown to the I"

Gun Club was mentioned above and P. Morrissey was prominent in Sisters of Mercy, as well.

And yeah, Interpol, which is kinda noteworthy for all of the acclaim they got for their first bassist who they then fired, to be replaced by the singer on bass, who is also very good in that vein.

Do The Stooges with Watt count? I would say so ... I mean, kinda like post-post-proto-punk ...

The MIB singer/bassist's other band, Consonant.

I really like Lou Barlow's unconventional bassing in Dino, jr., etc., although it's almost like he's chording as rhythm guitar = you know, Lemmie-style.

Peter Hook and The Light, of course, which includes his son.

I always I felt I could hear both parts loud and clear ; except for a few parts that were mostly noise, where it was hard to tell exactly who was playing what - but it soon made sense when you saw them live.


BTW if you've got any links to the radio broadcasts you mentioned, I'd love to hear them (the only one that springs to mind was "Dave's Basement" (?) which was a studio session, released as "8 Rounds : GVSB vs GBV" with Guided by Voices, and there were the live tracks (I think from a French show) on the Kill The Sex Player CD single.

I remember they did a session recording circa Cruise Yourself, at the BBC, which I managed to miss (didn't really listen to the Mark Goodier show by that point), but Johnny told me it didn't turn out very good, and I hadn't missed much. (would still love to hear it though).
