Motion to Rename HPF and LPF

pass ... high pass low pass ... why the word pass ... what is being passed?

A high pass filter allows frequencies above (higher than) the cutoff/rolloff frequency point to pass through the filter unattenuated. i.e. the frequencies higher than your cut-off point are allowed to pass. And vice versa for low pass filters. I mentioned in my post I get that some people prefer hi-cut/low-cut, but I don't understand what is counter-intuitive about the name of the HPF/LPF.

Just for the sake of philosophy, to play a little, and because I mostly agree with the OP, let me point out that applying the same logic to your example, a coffee filter should be called a "WATER PASS FILTER"... Since what it does is letting the coffee infused water through but keeping out the coffee grounds themselves...
So I think you are mostly agreeing with the OP's opinion ;)
So lots of posts hung up on the word "filter". In this case it is a noun, specifically a type of circuit.

It doesn't "filter" anything. It is a filter that passes the specified band of frequencies. Look to the adjectives for the description of action.

OP, I'm right there with you. I find it to be a confusing naming convention.
I actually agree. Naming a FILTER according to what it doesn't filter is confusing and illogical. I'd just use the terms high filter (= filters highs) and low filter. Band pass filter could stay unchanged.

Still, never gonna happen.
 
I used to think anyone could be an electrical engineer (I am, after all, and if I can, then anyone should be able). After reading this thread, I'm not so sure about that premise.

The terminology is from the most basic, standard, fundamental categories of filter types that are studied in first-year signals classes. They do exactly what their names imply: they pass the relative frequencies of interest (high, low, etc) through the circuit to the next stage and shunt all other frequencies to ground.

If college freshmen and high school kids can understand it, then it's not difficult.

It's a small thing, but I find the terms High Pass Filter and Low Pass Filter confusing. Every time I hear the terms, I have to think through what they're doing. I propose going back in time and popularizing them as Low Cut Filter and High Cut Filter! You know, name the filters after what they filter instead of what they don't filter.

I'm not an idiot (abundant life-choice counterexamples aside) and I have, like, totally serious degrees in engineering and stuff. I can figure out what these pedals do. They just need better names, IMHO. Just me? :laugh:

like I know we are being silly here, but I think it's a good opportunity to note that the naming high-pass/ low-pass can be quite informative of how to apply it as opposed to the bass and treble knobs
