Motion to Rename HPF and LPF

The name describes the filter's passband. The naming convention is already correct and does not require renaming. What's important to the end user is what you're hearing in the passband after implementation of the filter, not the portion that you can no longer hear.

I agree with the OP, but have learned to accept the nomenclature, along with "Jumbo Shrimp", "It goes without saying" and "Political Science".

"Civil war", "much ado about nothing" and "15 minutes or it's free" bother me too.

I actually agree. Naming a FILTER according to what it doesn't filter is confusing and illogical. I'd just use the terms high filter (= filters highs) and low filter. Band pass filter could stay unchanged.

Still, never gonna happen.

A similar logic as 'collision repair'.
'Body damage repair' would make more sense.

This kind of language introspection is the same reason Gallagher is funny. The sledge hammer and water melons also help.

I propose going back in time and popularizing them as Low Cut Filter and High Cut Filter! You know, name the filters after what they filter instead of what they don't filter.

I'm not an idiot (abundant life-choice counterexamples aside) and I have, like, totally serious degrees in engineering and stuff. I can figure out what these pedals do. They just need better names, IMHO. Just me?

This is an excellent suggestion! I've been encountering filters for over 20 years in my electronic music production and teaching, and EVERY TIME it comes up, I have to think it through, as you said...

For years I've been trying to get people to adopt the word 'dethaw' when freezing something.

You take something out of the freezer to thaw, why wouldn't putting something IN the freezer be de-thawing it????

So lots of posts hung up on the word "filter". In this case it is a noun, specifically a type of circuit.

It doesn't "filter" anything. It is a filter that passes the specified band of frequencies. Look to the adjectives for the description of action.

It filters what it doesn't allow to pass.

I am not an engineer but I really have to think twice when I hear these terms but, I am getting used to it!

Yes! I'm with the OP.

I'm familiar with the science and completely get that the terminology is correct and logical.

But to me, in live use, it's like those tests where they show the name of a color, printed with letters in a different color - red, blue, green, yellow - and you're supposed to read the written word out loud as fast as you can.

Perfectly logical and simple, but still confusing.
Low cut and high cut for me, please!
