Yeah that breaks down with the physical filter analogy - no one says water pass filter.

Plus it's not the same as a physical membrane filter. It really is just the name of a type of circuit.

I guess that the current names were natural from the perspective of those who named them, but for the sake of the end-user I agree with the original poster.

And, if a manufacturer should suddenly switch to labeling with Low Cut instead of HPF, I don't think it would cause any misunderstanding among laypersons, and would save having to explain it.

And, the user would automatically correctly expect that turning a Low Cut clockwise cuts more lows,

but if the knob is labeled HPF, and after he has (almost necessarily) read the explanation of what that means, he turns the knob clockwise and expects MORE highs to be passed. But in fact, fewer highs get passed (here 40Hz is "high" compared to 20Hz); turning the knob to the right passes fewer highs, counterintuitive if the name is HPF. So another explanation is required (or the user must figure it out).

Makes me think of other established terms that could have been different....cap remover instead of bottle opener, or, waste management filter instead of diaper ( in which case you want everything filtered and nothing passing through )

Also, one benefit of having to think twice about a term, is having more understanding of it than you first thought.

Easiest for the end user would be to label it Low Bass, and reverse the action of the pot so that counter-clockwise decreases the lowest lows; this is most intuitive because it acts like the other familiar tone knobs.

Low Cut / Pop Filter = High pass filter , just ask a console.

In the old days they were called "RUMBLE" and "SCRATCH" filters, with other interesting terminology like "Wow" and "Flutter".
My fav filter was "Contour"

It's a small thing, but I find the terms High Pass Filter and Low Pass Filter confusing. Every time I hear the terms, I have to think through what they're doing. I propose going back in time and popularizing them as Low Cut Filter and High Cut Filter! You know, name the filters after what they filter instead of what they don't filter.

I'm not an idiot (abundant life-choice counterexamples aside) and I have, like, totally serious degrees in engineering and stuff. I can figure out what these pedals do. They just need better names, IMHO. Just me?

This thread puts me in mind of a colleague I once had back in the days when computer screens were all green. He obscurely referred to the symbols > and < as "west-bound chicken" and "east-bound chicken" respectively. I used to have to stop and think each time LOL
Quite creative for an accountant though!
